What is
TPACK?
The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge
(TPACK) model is a framework that combines the
teacher’s three knowledge areas TECHNOLOGICAL
KNOWLEDGE, CONTENT KNOWLEDGE, and
PEDAGOGICAL KNOWLEDGE. It is a theory that was
introduced by Punya Mishra and Matthew J. Koehler of
Michigan State University in 2006, and was developed to
explain the set of knowledge that teachers need to teach
their students a subject, teach effectively, and use
technology.
The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge
(TPACK) model consists of seven components that
educators need to consider when integrating technology
into their teaching practices:
1. Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)
2. Content Knowledge (CK)
3. Pedagogical Knowledge (PK)
4. Pedagogical and Content areas of Knowledge (PCK)
5. Technology Knowledge (TK)
6. Technology – Content Knowledge (TCK)
7. Technology – Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK)
1. Technological
Pedagogical Content
Knowledge (TPACK)
At the core of the TPACK
framework lies the intersection of
all three types of knowledge which
are the TECHNOLOGICAL,
PEDAGOGICAL and CONTENT
KNOWLEDGE.
This is the theoretical model describing
the capability of the 21st
century
teacher. It represents the synergy
between technology, pedagogy, and
content knowledge, enabling educators
to create effective and engaging
learning experiences by combining
expertise in these domains.
2. Content Knowledge (CK)
It refers to the WHAT or educator’s
knowledge of the subject matter they are
teaching, including the curriculum content
and a deep understanding of disciplinary
concepts and practices. This is the
understanding of the content such as
language, arts, math, science among
others.
3. Pedagogical
Knowledge (PK)
It is the HOW or the expert
knowledge in the science of
teaching from educational and
learning theories to individual
differences to strategies and
techniques as well as assessment
of learning.
It involves teachers’ knowledge about
teaching methods and practices,
including instructional strategies,
classroom management, assessment
techniques, and the psychology of
learning.
4. Pedagogical and
Content
Knowledge (PCK)
This represents an educator’s
knowledge of the teaching
methods and theories that best
support the specific content
they are teaching.
It combines content area
expertise with effective teaching
strategies. This simply refers to
how much competencies or
knowledge a teacher has in
making the students learn
concepts and skills.
5.Technology Knowledge (TK)
This is the teacher knowledge on how to
select, use and integrate technological tools in
the teaching and learning context. It describes
the teacher’s understanding of various
technologies and their functionalities,
including hardware, software, digital tools, and
technical skills necessary to use technology
effectively.
6. Technological and
Content
Knowledge (TCK)
This is the technology used in
a specific subject area to
enrich and deepen students
understanding of content.
This specifically refers to a
teacher's understanding of how
technology tools and digital
resources impact how content is
represented and the constraints
that content places on the selection
of tools and resources.
7. Technological and Pedagogical
Knowledge (TPK)
This involves the skill of seamlessly
integrating technology into pedagogical
practices, understanding how technology can
enhance teaching and learning, and critically
evaluating the benefits and drawbacks of
using technology in the classroom. It is
knowing how to select, use or develop
technology to manage student learning.
TPACK as a Framework for Technology - Driven Teaching and Learning
These components of the TPACK model highlight
the need for educators to have a well-rounded
understanding of how to effectively integrate
technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge to
enhance teaching and learning experiences in the
modern classroom. By balancing and integrating
these seven components of TPACK, educators can
effectively leverage technology to enhance
teaching practices, improve student engagement,
and maximize learning outcomes in the classroom.
