- 4. The art of the pick up ●You've got to be at your smoothest to win that person's attention. ● The smoothest talkers find ways to make connections. ● Smooth connections, also known as transitions, can pull together two totally different ideas.
- 5. Making connections ●Each of these pick up lines seeks to make a connection where there was none before: oExcuse me, can you empty your pockets? I believe you have stolen my heart. oAre you a parking ticket? Because you have fine written all over you. oDo you know karate? Because your body is kickin'.

- 8. Within sentences ●Linking words are your friends. See the handy handout! ● These words indicate the kind of relationship you want to convey through your examples. ● In fact, your excellent English teacher has even provided an example of a linking word that emphasizes her point for you.
- 9. Direct quotes According to English teachers Mundy and Skotnicki, "students should always incorporate direct quotes into their own sentences." Doing so demonstrates ownership of the quote.
