TRMA 585 P1: Developing A
Professional Online Identity Spring 2012
             JESSICA WALDROFF
ONLINE IDENTITIES, PERSONAL
 BRANDING, SOCIAL MEDIA
LINKEDIN

• Discovered new possibilities for connecting with
friends, colleagues, peers and various professionals
  through this channel
• Loved the discussion forums, especially those related
to current mental health issues, especially ACA,
  ORCA and many others
• My linkedin profile:
  http://www.linkedin.com/pub/jessica-waldroff/46/31/980
ONLINE PRIVACY

• There is no such thing as privacy anymore
• Remember your dear sweet granny: if you don’t
want her to see it, don’t post it - it will never go
  away
• Potential employers WILL check your online profile
  -keep it professional!
• This article was quite thought-provoking for me:
  http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/11/privacy-fades-
TWITTER #TRMA585
GOOGLE PLUS (G+)

• Loved the google alerts - allows me to learn more
about topics I am passionate about
• Interesting to see what others in this medium have
to say about various topics and passions in their lives
• My G+ account:
  https://plus.google.com/u/0/?tab=mX#10481930547122
PROFESSIONAL FACEBOOK PAGES

• Originally, I did not see Facebook as a place for
professionals to post and advertise themselves
• I could see eventually using it if I had a private
practice, but will keep it personal for now since I use
that to connect with family and friends
• This article from Julie Hanks opened my eyes about
  facebook in the professional world:
  http://blogs.psychcentral.com/private-practice/2011/08
LEARNING FROM MENTAL HEALTH
 PROFESSIONALS & ORGANIZATIONS
• Julie Hanks, LCSW, by far was my favorite; she really
is the go-to girl for online identity in the world of
  mental health: http://www.juliehanks.com/
• Other professional groups were helpful in answering
my questions and concerns about s entering the
  mental health profession
• AAMFT was fantastic in linking me to various articles
and videos on topics I was curious about:
  https://twitter.com/#!/TheAAMFT
BLOGS: BLOGGER, WORDPRESS,
         TUMBLR, POSTEROUS
• Tried blogging a bit before this class, but this article
  reaffirmed for methe benefits:
  http://www.zemanta.com/blog/5-reasons-why-you-shou
• It is interesting to see the different ways professionals
use their blogs to help clients, or potential clients for
that matter, but by far blogger is my favorite!
• Have had fun experimenting with how my blog
  looks - Check it out!
  http://jswaldroff00725.blogspot.com/
PORTFOLIOS & PROFILES

    http://about.me/jswaldroff
MANAGING YOUR ONLINE IDENTITY

• This can take a lot of time each day, but you will
see the benefits to keeping up with your identity-
same as anything else you maintain
• Hootsuite is my favorite for pulling everything
together in one place; makes it much easier! I have
not used it to its full potential, but I’m still learning
  the ropes 
WEBSITES & DOMAIN NAMES

• I was not aware of all of the intricacies involved in
setting up a website and domain name-who knew?
• I think what I have learned from this topic will help
prepare me down the road when I want to create
a professional website for my potential clients
HAVING AN IMPACT

• The Internet has become the medium for people
interact with one another on a daily basis
• Topics such as autism awareness, animal cruelty
and violence throughout the world have become
more prevalent thanks to people’s initiative to get
  the information out there
• This article helped me appreciate what the internet
  can do for the world:
  http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/10_readwritew
GOALS & STRATEGIES

• Be professional
• Bring awareness to topics you are passionate
about-you never know what you might start
• Keep it simple, but informative
• What we put out there ripples out to others in the
world-whether we see it immediately or down the
  road
SLIDESHARE

• Had no idea this existed before this class; I had
heard of other webistes like this, but not this one
  specifically
• Loved the presentations “Everything you need to
  know about the teen brain”:
   http://www.slideshare.net/teenmentalhealth/everything
FINAL THOUGHTS

• I found this class to be thought provoking and
  insightful
• Appreciated the discussion forums each week and
learning from others in the class
• These skills and tools will be a resource to me as I
continue through this program and into the
  professional world
• I have secretly become a twitter junkie ;-)

Editor's Notes

  • #6: Any way to shorten the first bullet or make it more “action” like? Also, is there supposed to be the hashtag before the link in the 3 rd bullet?
