Trusting on BTI Brazil-Turkey-Iran Agreement
Trust "The acceptance of vulnerability to harm that others could inflict, but which we judge that they will not inflict“ Can grow if "The acceptance of vulnerability to harm that others could inflict, but which we judge that they will not inflict" It has two basic approaches: rationalist and binding
Rationalist Approach Can be resumed in this sentence: "I trust you because I think it is in your interest to take my interests in the relevant matter seriously“ It’s vulnerable to Pay-off Structure of Interactions
Binding Approach The other party will do what is required to begin and maintain the relationship, because they value both its existence and its continuation; It’s not vulnerable to Pay-off Structure of Interactions
Ban Ki-Moon’s Comments About Brazil-Turkey-Iran Agreement “ At the heart of this crisis there appears to be a serious lack of trust and confidence in Iran”; “ Iran has at the same time declared it will continue the [uranium] enrichment process ”
About Iran For the Iranians - beyond their political paralysis of last year - the issue of trust was the primary flaw of the October 2009 proposal; The deal would have required that Iran place disproportionate trust in the Western powers by agreeing to give up its low-enriched uranium stockpile in one shipment, only to receive fuel rods for Iran's research reactor nine to twelve months later; This would have required a significant leap of faith on their behalf.
About Iran Moreover, unlike with the P5 states, Iran does not only have some trust in Turkey, it also senses that it has some leverage over its Western neighbor. In 2009, Iranian-Turkish trade stood at around $11 billion, with Iran providing a significant portion of Turkey's gas needs. The combination of trust and leverage seems to have been critical in getting the Iranians to agree to put their stockpiles in Turkish territory.
Around the world The International Movement for a Just World (JUST) is disappointed with US President Barack Obama for rejecting outright the Brazil-Turkey initiative on Iran’s nuclear programme. Obama could have welcomed it as an important first step towards building trust between Western powers and Iran.
Around the world There is a larger significance about supporting the Brazil-Turkey-Iran initiative. It is the clearest example so far of two middle powers working closely with a third to resolve the latter’s problem. It is a reflection of changing patterns of power in international politics. The emergence of middle powers prepared to defend their interests and to uphold certain principles that server the larger good of humanity is an important historical development. In the transition from superpower politics to multi-polar politics, middle powers would be crucial role players.
Conclusion Giving Iran a chance to prove that it is well-intentioned, at least this time, is a great chance to put this country into a group that is concerned with non-proliferation issue; With Iran as close as one could imagine, the international community will check better all the steps that Iran is advancing; Besides being a country with a tradition of war, Iran now is fitting itself on Global New Order, where there’s no space for lack of confidence among the countries; If Iran wants to have a highlighting role in International Relations, this country has to have a position of serious country respecting International rules
