turning space
  into place
A place comes into existence when
humans give meaning to a part of
the larger, undifferentiated space.

Some ideas to help students
 to (re)connect with place
Fake planning notices…

                      What would you miss
                      from your local place if
                      it was to disappear?

“Our proposal is to turn The Chocolate Box into a KFC. The reason
for this is because Wellington does not have a fast food takeaway
and we have a lot of cafes.”
If you disagree with this please tell us on our website
“We are proposing to change NatWest, Fore Street, into ‘Wellington
reptile house’. The reptile house will be funded by Amphibian Inc; and
NatWest plan to be moving to Swansea. Sorry for any inconvenience.”
Think inside the box…
Landscape in a box

Landscape in a box

Katie’s box..
representing
Ha Long Bay,
Vietnam
Katie describes her
box…
I have always lived in Halong
Bay.

Here, on our little Bar-hang
we are born, we fish, we die.

We spend our lives floating
about in the bay, never
stepping on land.

Life here is peaceful, no bills,
no loud streets or tires
screeching.

We live here. In the grasp of
nature.
                                   By Katie Drohan
The “real” HaLong Bay…
What do places sound
        like?
Fieldwork: Investigating topocide…
Find evidence of
                    topocide
Go somewhere you like that is in danger of
disappearing or changing forever. What is
    threatening to kill this place?
Take photographic evidence and submit it to
    your local authorities.

Topocide is the 'killing of a place' and can result in buildings,
landscapes and meaningful places being lost forever.

Turning Space into Place
Be on TV…Put on a performance for a CCTV
controller. You could improvise a short play, show off
a dance routine or hold a full blown talent show.

Bring the ghost pier back to life… Spot the ghostly
remains of Westward Ho!’s Pier at low tide. Bring the
pier back to life in your mind and draw what you
think it may have once looked like.

Write a strange(r) play… Go to a charity shop and buy some
random clothes that used to belong to other people. Draft and
perform a short play about the strangers who used to wear the
 clothes.

RIP… Find the oldest person buried in your local
graveyard. Leave a flower on their grave.
The TV studio at the end of the world

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Hello everyone…
  • #3: Pretentiousness alert!
  • #4: Substitute “ learning ” and “ human knowledge ” for place and space
  • #5: A familiar cry?
  • #6: 3 classroom ideas and a website to give meaning to space
  • #7: Fake Planning project to get students to think about their local area. Subvertising in the local community. What would you miss most if it disappeared?
  • #8: The most controversial caused several complaints.
  • #9: An idea from geographer Alan Parkinson. Research a place, identify the key components and recreate inside a box
  • #10: Resulted in extraordinary creativity across the ability range
  • #11: Katie has never been to Vietnam
  • #12: But she completed this short piece of writing about her place
  • #13: that seemed to recreate the real HaLong Bay perfectly – not just the landscape but empathy with people
  • #14: Working with an ICT teacher Lee Turnbull, the class used Soundation to create “ soundscapes ” for their boxes. Links to this work and fake plans on digitalgeography.co.uk
  • #15: No point in doing fieldwork if you know what the outcome will be in advance. Here ’ s a Year 8 student in the boiler room of an old textile mill. This place may or may not become a museum. The buildings were “ space ” until the students visited, carried out fieldwork and imagined what sort of place should be created from the derelict buildings.
  • #16: Investigating topocide is one of many “ missions ” on Mission Explore
  • #17: Teachers can create mission explore groups for their class. Can join with other schools and local organizations to create mini adventures and investigations.
  • #18: A flavour of Mission Explore… Great for Geography but links to Art, English, Maths, Drama, ICT
  • #19: Curiosity about place is something we should never grow out of. The TV studio at the end of the world, underground somewhere near Bristol.
