DESIGNED TO PRODUCE
A Little bit about Me
When I bought my first car at the age of 17 (a Ford Mk.1 Escort in British racing green), the very first
thing I did was take it all to pieces. I had to know how it worked. I had to know how to improve it.

35 years later, my attitude has not changed a bit.
Changing the way in which design teams and clients think about production is my aim; helping them
see opportunities rather than limitations.
I joined my current employer Identica in 1999, and have since worked on over 2000 global
production projects. From drinks packaging to aeroplane interiors, corporate branding to retail
environments. I have produced premium products for many high profile clients*, and crucially, I have
saved them money.
After 35 years in the design industry, I have decided to work on a part-time basis for Identica,
allowing me to work on my own projects. Exciting times!
I admit to being unreasonably distressed when confronted with inferior or poorly thought out
branding and packaging.
My other passions are my family, cycling, healthy food and the great outdoors.
* Including Pernod Ricard, Bacardi, Russian Standard, Britvic, Nike, Tesco, Post Office, Pizza Hut, Cinema City, Fat Face, Dockers, Aeroflot, Butlers, Ecozone, Wembley, Carlsberg, Pip Organic, Footlocker, Smirnov, Stolichnaya, Beluga, Which ……..
Case studies
The following are just a few randomly picked projects
from the 2000 plus that where fun to work on.

some old and some new some for large established
brands and some for start-ups
Amtech needed to standout in a busy DIY
sector and look consistent across their
huge range of products.
With global suppliers for both
manufacturing and packaging,

consistency was an issue.
• I used a simply repeatable colour palette
• Produced colour tests and distributed

a colour standard to all suppliers
• Standardised the stocks used where
possible
• Create easy to understand master
artwork files for each tool category
• Created a simply master illustration style
• Structual design for POS stands
• Sourced new suppliers
• Post project production consultancy
Pernod Ricard’s Ararat Armenian brandy
needed to feel more premium but without
increasing the cost of goods.
With nine in the range from 3 year old to
50 year old it was a case of saving money
at the lower end to spend at the top end.
Designing 3 bottle shapes, 3 closures and
3 label shapes across the range of nine.
• Producing all the structural drawings
• Artwork and label cutter guides
• Print testing and final print
management.
• Mock-ups and prototypes
• Post project production consultancy
WOW Chia was an NPD idea from a
team of guys wanting to get into the
healthy drinks category using chia seeds.
It was to be initially produced and
launched in Germany and then in the UK.
We needed to find find a cost effective
solution taking into account logistics.
• Sourcing contract filling and packing

• Off the shelf bottles

• Label Printers
• Produced all artwork
• Print testing and final print
management.
• Produced mock-ups and prototypes
• On going production consultancy
Aloura was a start-up fashion brand
needing support throughout the whole
design and production process.
• I sourced suppliers for all areas
• Print testing and print management
• Created all artwork files
• Produced structural designs for bags
and boxes
• Produced mock-ups and prototypes
• Post project production consultancy
My local Bromley cycling club

of which I’m a member, had

a rather out of date kit based

on its mountain bike heritage.

I could not help myself.

With over 500 members and a large proportion

of them roadies, it was time for a new brand

and kit design. The brief from the committee

was the name had to stay, the foot had to stay in

some form and the club colours should feel similar.

They wanted something that the kids, the

more mature members and the professional racers
would feel proud to wear. Plus a brand logo that
could be used beyond the kit.
I designed the new brand and kit. Then worked with
Endura in Scotland to produce a large range of
items for both summer and winter. The orders for
the new kit have been amazing and the number of
members are increasing.
Yes the person in the picture trying to balance at a
very slow speed, in order to achieve the shot is me,
showing off the first samples of the summer kit.
We would take the latest

Nike shoe campaign design,
produce and deliver wall
bays, in store graphics and
window displays for over 300
Footlocker stores around
Europe. With sometimes
more than one campaign a
month, over a 3 years period
a total of 40 campaigns were
delivered into Footlocker.
• Structual Design
• Manufacturing
• Shipment
• Installation
• Artwork
• Print management
Baltic Beer Russians No1 beer, part of the Carlsberg Group had just invested in state of the art
equipment. With a range of 9 beers, they needed 3 new bottle designs one for each category,

to compete with imported beers, save on glass, save on breakages and run down the same

line without the need for change parts. I loved this challenge and achieved on all counts.
• Mock-ups and prototypes
• Bottle testing
• Production consultancy
• Producing all the structural drawings
• Artwork and label cutter guides
• Print testing and final print management.
MIGHTY MAC
Mac a South African with a larger than life personality
hand made high quality biltong. He needed a simple
packaging solution that could be ordered in small
batches and be hand finished. This lovely design

using a illustration of Mac himself was created.

To keep costs to an absolute minimum
• The biltong was hand vacuum packed to a foil
board which then simply slotted into the gate

folded outer.
• The outer was hand printed on a proofing press in
two colours and the green stork to the chilli ticked
in with a pen.
• Garden string was use as the tie around the apron
to hold everything together.

A lovely example of a low cost small batch solution.
Some more brands I have worked with
combing design and production to great effect.
