● Visited around 4:30 PM, generally visit a few times a year.
● Store fairly busy, all cash registers being operated.
● Clearly had heavy traffic, many of clothes have been shuffled through
● Top 40 music in the background, drowns out any conversational noise.
● Men’s section significantly smaller than women’s section, as usual limited
selection of larger sizes.
● Attendants friendly, but mostly occupied either with customers, or with
different tasks.

● Visited around 5:00 PM, immediately greeted upon entry by sales
representative.
● 3-4 employees, 2 at register, others helping customers.
● Top 40 music playing, drowns out any sort of conversation. Store fairly
empty.
● Store very clean and organized.
The Container Store
Whole Foods
● Visited around 5:30 PM, store very busy.
● Could hear the AC, some conversational noise. Music was audible more so
in some areas than others.
● Store was cleaner than most grocery stores.
● Large windows helped provide natural light, but made it difficult to take
pictures from certain angles.
● Only had interaction with cashier.
Whole Foods
Best Buy
● Visited around 6:00, immediately greeted upon entry by security at door.
● Noticable changes since last visit.
○ Extremely limited library or CDs, videos, and video games compared to 5-10 years ago.
○ Emphasis placed on advertising home appliances and electronics.
● Top 40 music drowns out any conversational background noise.
● Asked if I needed assistance by numerous sales representatives while
observing.
● Upon leaving, security guard cracked joke that I was leaving empty handed.
Best Buy
Half Priced Books
● Visited around 6:45 PM
● Greeted upon entry
● Jazz music and oldies played in the background
● Could smell the old books, only 1-2 other people in store.
● Large selection of books, great for finding novels, but not helpful for any new
releases.

● Visited around 7:30 PM, regular patron at neighborhood location.
● Greeted by cashier and kitchen staff, cashier already knew my order.
● Spanish soccer game on TV, covered up most noise inside.
● 5-10 other patrons placed order or picked up food while I waited.
● Could smell the food, kitchen is visible.
Pizza on 40th
Observations
● Certain stores had more friendly staff than others.
● All stores generally clean in appearance.
● All stores open when visited, maintain regular retail hours.
● Music was loud enough to drown out background noise in most locations, the
exception being Whole Foods, which also had the most patrons and traffic.
● Majority of stores visited had open floor plans or it was easy to navigate
through aisles, and larger retail outlets had high ceilings.
● Each store fulfilled a specific need from a retail standpoint.
