- 2. 1. Langstroth Hive • Invented by Dr. L.L. Langstorth in 1851 • First hive to contain removable frames • Consists of : A bottom board, supers, inner cover , outer cover, frames
- 4. Advantages: • Easy harvesting- desired frames can be removed • Standardized equipment- i.e. replacement easy • Movability • Production- maximize honey production minimize drone production • Ventilation- better than top-bar hive
- 5. Disadvantages • Weight: very heavy • Aesthetics: not easy on the eye i.e. not aesthetically pleasing • Unnatural design: because bee prefer building comb in tall, rounded structures
- 6. 2. Warre Hive • Developed by Emile Warre • Also called “The People’s Hive” • Smaller than langstroth • Ideal when pollination is your main goal
- 8. Advantages • Minimum intervention- mimics a hollow tree. • Good temperature and humidity control • Aesthetics • Production: comparable to langstroth if managed properly
- 9. Disadvantages • Expensive • Requires two person • Harvesting is harder than langstroth
- 10. Top-bar Hive • Have been around for centuries • No artificial foundation is used
- 12. Advantages • Low prices • Easy to remove frames • Saves space • Minimal disruption- good for pollination
- 13. Disadvantages • Temperature regulation is hard- specially in winter • Inconsistent production • No standardized equipment • Queen rearing is harder
