Types of Media:
Print Media, Broadcast
Media, New Media
and Media Convergence
Objectives:
• Identify the different types of media
• Define media convergence; and
• Demonstrate how variety of media affects everyday
life through a sketch, reels and other forms of new
media
 The term news Media refers to the groups that
communicate information and news to people.
There are three main types of news media: print
media, broadcast media, and the Internet.
It is a form of advertising that uses physically printed media and a
media consisting of paper and ink, reproduced in a printing process
that is traditionally mechanical. The term 'print media' is used to
describe the traditional or "old-fashioned" print-based media that
today's parents grew up with. Whereas print media was once much
more prevalent, the advent of e-books, digital publishing tools and
applications have caused many groups that typically created print
media to begin publishing through digital channels.
For today the Print Media is the most prominent and trusted media
form, and it went through several hardships, struggles and
amendments just after it started.
One of the reasons for those hardships could be the independence of
the country but one can also not deny that the Print Media itself was
a strong weapon that was used during the independence combat.
Print media is an easy medium to spread awareness or advertise to
any particular geographical area. Like, a local newspaper is the best
way to spread the news about any local event of the place.
Magazines, newspapers, flyers, newsletters, journal, posters,
brochures, books, scholarly journals and other materials that are
physically printed on paper are examples of print media.
Advantages of print media
Flashy magazines are always popular among consumers and are often read
by them for a particular period of time in a month. The monthly
magazines are the best way to bring attention to any advertisements.
Some forms of the print media have huge and trusted followers. This is
definitely a great boost to attract readership.
Print media allows you to choose your own space for advertisement, thus,
you can manage your budget and expenses while planning for the
advertisement.
Talking about the advantages the Print Media is considered as most
accurate and trustworthy in its genre, as compared to the broadcast media
and the new media because it focus on the real story presentation rather
than the broadcast of rumors and hoax.
Disadvantages of print media
If you are targeting the global audience, then this is not the medium you
should go for. Instead, the internet has a much wider reach than print media in
this.
Placing an advertisement in print media requires a lot of planning and time. In
this case, you are faced with flexibility problem, particularly when you work in
tight deadlines.
In fact, there are many limitations when it comes to targeting your audience as
the particular newspaper may not be available to the audience all the time. On
the other hand, a person can get access to the internet from anywhere and
everywhere.
Besides, most of the time, your advertisement might get lost among all other
ads and editorials. Plus, the lifespan of newspaper and magazines is very short
as people have a tendency to throw them or keep them aside after one day of
reading.
There are both advantages and disadvantages for print media. We have to
keep all these in mind and make the right planning to make the optimum use
of print media.
Broadcasting media provides valuable information, for example speeches,
documentaries, interviews, advertisements, daily news, financial markets and
much more. The latest (newest/most up-to-date) information can be found here.
Historically, broadcast media has been a public service, as with public radio which
is funded by the government.
The term 'broadcast media' covers a wide range of different communication
methods that include television, radio, podcasts, blogs, advertising, websites,
online streaming and digital journalism. Broadcast media provides valuable
information that can inform and educate and includes public service
announcements, daily news, weather forecasts, interviews, and documentaries.
Broadcast media is also recreational and includes reality television, situation and
sketch comedies, movies, sports and advertising.
Though TV and radio each have their own advantages and disadvantages, as
broadcast media, they share some advantages relative to print, including:
Multi-sensory appeal: Though radio doesn't have a visual element, both
radio and TV can offer ongoing dialogue and action and background sounds.
These qualities enable potential high-impact story presentations that create
emotional appeals.
Wide reach: Television offers a wide national audience reach, while radio
allows small companies to affordably reach a wide local market. The ability
to reach a large portion of a target audience benefits companies with a goal
of increased awareness.
New media is used to describe content made available using different
forms of electronic communication made possible through the use of
computer technology. Generally, the phrase new media describes
content available on-demand through the Internet.
This content can be viewed on any device and provides way for people
to interact with the content in real-time with the inclusion of user
comments and making it easy for people to share the content online
and in social with friends and co-workers.New media have been the
most popular trend for the last few years. It is now considered as part
of everyone's life and that is used daily.
The phrase new media is in relation to "old" media forms, such as
print newspapers and magazines, that are static representations of
text and graphics. New media includes websites and blogs
streaming audio and video chat rooms email online communities
social media and sharing platforms mobile apps Web advertising
DVD and CD-ROM media virtual reality environments integration of
digital data with the telephone, such as Internet telephony digital
cameras
New media has, and continues to, change the way in which most
small businesses operate. Unlike the one-way communication paths
displayed by “old media” formats such as television, radio and
paper-based publications, new media technology is both digital and
interactive. From connecting with customers to making it easier to
compete with larger businesses, the advantages that the internet,
electronic communications and social media provide most small
businesses are as numerous as its uses.
Social media may be the most visible form of this new type of
media, but it's far from the only way information is shared today. All
forms of new media strive to add an element of participation in
order to engage readers and give them a sense of membership.
Websites have private forums dedicated to talking about goods and
services with their customers. The growing number of review sites
such as Yelp! and TripAdvisor have a huge influence on countless
businesses. Even virtual contest sites can inform consumers while
attracting large numbers of people to try new products.
Advantages of New Media
Potential for Cost Savings
New-media advertising is often less expensive than advertising in
traditional media. Perhaps the biggest advantage of using new
media is that the lack of any barriers that prevent a small business
from entering the digital arena. Wider Customer Base
An internet presence and email communications have the potential
to expand a small business's customer base exponentially. Unlike
the limited scope and time delay characteristic of traditional
advertising methods, new media options allow not only for instant
connections but also for connecting on a number of different levels.
Some of the most common ways to help potential customers learn
about and purchase products include: Websites, Email newsletters,
Participating in social media sites, Advertising on Facebook ,
Instagram ads, Twitter promotions, Sustained Competitive
Advantage.
The first advantage is that social media offers opportunities for professional
online networking, and it is a valuable business tool. LinkedIn for instance, it is
a tool that allows users to put an online resume and their CVs on their profile
so that they stay connected with business people and get job offers by only
looking through their profile. Moreover, instead of going through your
business cards and remembering each person, you can easily look up their
names and check their profile.
Furthermore, new media is accessible anytime and anywhere. It is considered
as a news tool, you can check the news as soon as it happens and not have to
wait for the morning newspaper every day. Twitter, Facebook, and online
news serve in publishing the news in the same minute or even the same
second. You can also spread news that happened around you and share it
with friends and other users, while in newspaper or TV you cannot do so.
Another advantage is that you can always stay connected with people all over
the world. Old friends, families who live far away, or colleagues. It has been
easier for people to communicate with others, sharing the moments, sending
pictures and videos through the social networking. This has made long
distances between people, shorter.
On the other hand, new media is not always a reliable source to get
news from, because everyone can be posting wrong news just for
fun and grabbing attention. There is no publisher to check whether
the information written is wrong or right unlike newspaper, TV, or
radio there is always an editor and publisher that insures that
information published to the audience is right.
Although social media has connected us with people all over the
world, but this has affected our face to face communication. Now a
days, people are preferring communicating through social media
rather than face to face and this have increased the online
relationships. Wherever you go now, you can realize how people
are sitting together physically, but using their smart -phones
communicating with others, so eventually they are mentally not
together. This will affect our lives in a way or another, for instance,
in business life you will not be able and not have the experience to
communicate with employers and consumers and this will
obviously affect your job.
Moreover, it has hacked our lives and privacy. For example, now a
days through the social media you can know details about a person
just by entering their account in any application. Seeing pictures
where he/she has went, what have they done, and etc. You can't
anymore have privacy like before and have your own life, you
always feel like you to share it with others.
