What is a monitor
• A computer monitor to be specific is an input device that also allows the user
with a output
• Originally computers monitors where used for data processing while television
sets where used for entertainment
• From the 1930s onwards computers, and there monitors have been used for both
data processing and entertainment
• Modern computer monitors are easily interchangeable with conventional
television sets and vice versa
• However many computer monitors don’t include integrated speakers so it is not
possible to get the TV entertainment experience without external components
3
The basic components of a computer monitor
• Screen
the screen is an important part of a monitor
• Layered Glass
A monitors LCD screen is made up of different layers of glass
• Stands
Stands are also an important part of the monitor without it the monitor cannot
stand
• Power connects
The power converter is also an important part of the monitor
4
Basic components (continue)
• Interface board
the interface is also part of the monitor
• Amplifier circuit
the amplifier circuit is also a part of a monitor that helps amplify all types of
video signals
• Reflectors and light sources
reflectors and light sources are also a part of a computer monitor using a
beam of light
5
Monitors
Types of monitors
6
Have you ever wondered which type of monitor
are you using to watch TV or playing games? In
todays digital world we have seen different types
of monitors. We spend most of our time sitting
in front of many types of monitors, like playing
games, watching movies, and many other things
. There are five different types of monitors in
todays digital world . They include;
1. LCD monitor
2. LED monitor
3. OLED monitor
4...Plasma monitor
5. CRT monitors
7
1.LCD MONITORS
LCD is known as “liquid
crystal display”. It is the most
widely used monitor
worldwide, as it requires less
space, less power, consumes
less energy, and produces
relatively less heathen the old
CRT monitor.
8
9
2.LED MONITORS
“Light Emitting Diode” is the
latest innovation in the market
competing with LCD and Plasma
monitors. These types of monitors
are slightly curved or flat panel
display that use light-emitting diodes
for backlighting on the screen
instead of cold Cathode fluorescent
(CCFL) for backlighting.
10
11
3.OLED MONITORS
Organic Light Emitting Diode “as the
name suggests it is made of organic
materials (such as carbon, plastic, wood,
and polymers), that is used to convert
electric current into light.
This is also the latest display technology
used in displays of television, computer
screen, game consoles, PDAs, or even in
the latest smartphone.it can be thinner or
lighter with higher contrast than LCDs.
12
13
4.PLASMA MONITORS
Plasma Monitor panel is made up of
plasma technology which is another
innovation in computer monitor
technology. Dispaly of plasma is made
with cells. These cells are filled with
“electrically changed ionized gas “Such
cells are called plasma.
14
15
5.CRT MONITORS
Here CRT means “Cathode
Ray Tube”. Its main part is
cathode ray tube which is
called the “Generally picture
Tube “.
16
17
18
Display modes
The term display mode refers to the characteristics of a computer display, in
particular the maximum number of colors and the maximum image resolution
in pixels horizontally by pixels vertically.
19
20
TYPES OF DISPLAY MODES:
21
ENHANCED GRAPHICS
ADAPTER(EGA)
The Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA)
display was introduced in 1984 by the
IBM. It allowed up to 16 different
colors and offered resolution of up to
640 x 350. This improved the
appearance over earlier displays, and
made it possible to read text easily.
VIDEO GRAPHICS ARRAY(VGA)
• In 1987, IBM introduced the Video
Graphics Array (VGA) display
system. This has become the
accepted minimum standard for
PCs. Some VGA monitors are still in
use today. The maximum resolution
depends on the number of colors
displayed. You can choose between
16 colors at 640 x 480, or 256
colors at 320 x 200.
22
23
EXTENDED GRAPHICS
ARRAY
In 1990, IBM introduced the
Extended Graphics Array (XGA)
display . XGA offers 800 x 600
pixel resolution in true color (16
million colors) and 1024 x 768
resolution in 65,536 colors. These
two image resolution levels are
perhaps the most popular in use
today by individuals and small
businesses. 24
SUPER VIDEO
GRAPHICS ARRAY
The Video Electronics
Standards Association
(VESA) introduced the Super
Video Graphics Array (SVGA)
displays, which can support
a palette of up to
16,000,000 colors, although
the amount of video
memory in a particular 25
SUPER EXTENDED
GRAPHICS ARRAY
The Super Extended
Graphics Array (SXGA) it’s
specifications are generally
used in reference to screens
with 1280 x 1024 resolution
26
ULTRA EXTENDED
ARRAY
The Ultra Extended Graphics
Array (UXGA) refers to a
resolution of 1600 by 1200.

Touchscreen
• A touchscreen or touch screen is the assembly of both an input ('touch panel') and output
('display') device. The touch panel is normally layered on the top of an electronic visual
display of an information processing system. The display is often an LCD, AMOLED
or OLED display while the system is usually a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
• A user can give input or control the information processing system through simple or multi
touch gestures by touching the screen with a special stylus or one or more fingers. Some
touchscreens use ordinary or specially coated gloves to work while others may only work
using a special stylus or pen. The user can use the touchscreen to react to what is displayed
and, if the software allows, to control how it is displayed; for example, zooming to increase
the text size.
• The touchscreen enables the user to interact directly with what is displayed, rather than
using a mouse, touchpad, or other such devices (other than a stylus, which is optional for
most modern touchscreens).
30
31
Types of touch screen
monitors
Resistive touch screen
Resistive Touch is the most widely touch
technology in use today. A resistive touch
screen monitor is composed of a glass
panel and a film screen, each covered with
a thin metallic layer, separated by a
narrow gap. When a user touches the
screen, the two metallic layers make
contact, resulting in electrical flow. The
point of contact is detected by this change
in voltage. 32
Surface acoustic wave
surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology
uses ultrasonic waves that pass over the
touchscreen panel. When the panel is
touched, a portion of the wave is
absorbed. The change in ultrasonic
waves is processed by the controller to
determine the position of the touch
event. Surface acoustic wave touchscreen
panels can be damaged by outside
elements. Contaminants on the surface
can also interfere with the functionality
of the touchscreen.
33
Projected Capacitive
Touch Screen
Projected Capacitive (P-Cap) is similar to
Surface Capacitive, but it offers two primary
advantages. First, in addition to a bare finger,
it can also be activated with surgical gloves or
thin cotton gloves. Secondly, P-Cap enables
multi-touch activation (simultaneous input
from two or more fingers). A projected
capacitive touch screen is composed of a
sheet of glass with embedded transparent
electrode films and an IC chip.
34
Thank you!!
“Technology is nothing .What is important is to have faith in
people ,that they are basically good and smart , if you give them
tools ,They’ll do wonderful things with them.”
