Personal area networks (PANs) connect devices like computers, phones and printers around a single person within one building. Local area networks (LANs) connect devices over short distances within or between nearby buildings to share resources. Wireless local area networks (WLANs) function like LANs but use wireless technology instead of physical cables. Campus area networks (CANs) are larger than LANs but smaller than metropolitan area networks (MANs) and connect devices across several close buildings like on a university campus.
