There are four main types of patterns used in casting: 1) Solid patterns which are inexpensive but only used for simple parts without withdrawal issues, 2) Split patterns which are most widely used and split along the parting surface, requiring dowel pins for alignment, 3) Loose piece patterns where small projections are made separately to aid withdrawal, and 4) Match-plate patterns which are used for intricate castings with undercuts.

- 2. 1.Solid or single piece patternThe one piece or single pattern is the most inexpensive of all types of patterns. This type of pattern is used only in cases where the job is very simple and does not create any withdrawal problems.
