TYPES OF
RESOURCES
CLASS X
GEOGRAPHY
CHAPTER: RESOURCE &
DEVELOPMENT
MODULE : II
A. General Classification
ď‚›Natural Resources
ď‚›Man made Resources
ď‚›Human Resources
NATURAL RESOUCES
ď‚›These are freely available in the
nature
ď‚›They are naturally formed.
ď‚›Examples: Water, Soil, Sunlight
,Wind .
Types of resources
MAN MADE RESOURCES
ď‚›These are the resources made
by human beings .
ď‚›These are either made from
natural items or made newly .
ď‚›Example: Furniture ,T.V, Books
,Vehicles
Types of resources
HUMAN RESOURCES
ď‚›It includes human beings and our
qualities and potentials.
ď‚›Examples: Health ,Beauty
,Intelligence.
B. On the basis of Origin
ď‚›Biotic
ď‚›Abiotic
BIOTIC RESOURCES
ď‚›These are obtained from
biosphere.
ď‚›They have life or living
resources .
ď‚›Examples: Human beings, Flora
,Fauna, Livestock.
ABIOTIC RESOURCES
ď‚›These are composed of non living
things .
ď‚›These are resources without life.
ď‚›Example: Rocks and metals.
C . On The Basis Of
Exhaustibility or Use.
ď‚›Renewable Resources
ď‚›Non Renewable Resources
RENEWABLE RESOURCES
ď‚›These are the resources that can be
renewed or reproduced by physical,
chemical or mechanical processes .
ď‚›They are also known as replenishable or
inexhaustible resources.
ď‚›They are further be divided into continuous
or flow.
ď‚›The formation of these type of resources
takes short period of time for its formation.
ď‚›They are generally found abundant in nature
.
NON-RENEWABLE
RESOURCES
ď‚› These are the resources that cannot be renewed
or reproduced by physical, chemical or
mechanical processes .
ď‚› They are also known as non replenishable or
exhaustible resources .
ď‚› They are further be divided into recyclable and
non recyclable resources .
ď‚› These resources take millions of years in their
formation.
ď‚› They are scarce or limited in nature .
Types of resources
D. On the basis of Ownership.
ď‚›Individual Resources
ď‚›Community Owned
Resources
ď‚›National Resources
ď‚›International resources
INDIVIDUAL RESOURCES
ď‚›These are owned by private
individuals.
ď‚›Example: Individual plots of
land, Houses and other
property, Plantation ,Pasture
lands ,Ponds ,Water in well etc.
COMMUNITY OWNED
RESOURCES
ď‚›These are resources which are
accessible to all the members of
the community .
ď‚›Examples: Common grazing
grounds ,Burial grounds,
Village ponds ,Public Parks,
playgrounds.
NATIONAL RESOURCES
ď‚›All the resources belongs to the
nation.
ď‚›It includes all the minerals,
water resources ,forests
,wildlife ,land with in the
political boundaries and
oceanic area up to 12 nautical
miles (12.2 KM) from the coast
termed as territorial water .
INTERNATIONAL
RESOURCES
ď‚›These are under the regulation
or management of some
international organizations.
ď‚›Examples: The oceanic
resources beyond 200 nautical
miles ,Atmosphere ,Sun etc.
E. On the Basis of Status of
Development.
ď‚›Potential Resources
ď‚›Developed resources
ď‚›Stock
ď‚›Reserve
POTENTIAL RESOURCES
ď‚›Resources which are found in a
region, but have not been
utilized .
ď‚›Example: Solar and wind energy
potential in western parts of
India, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
DEVELOPED RESOURCES
ď‚›Resources which are surveyed
and their quality and quantity
have been determined for
utilization.
ď‚›The development of these
resources depends upon the
level of technology and
feasibility.
STOCK
ď‚›Materials in the environment
which have the potential to
satisfy human needs but human
beings do not have the
appropriate technology to use
these .
ď‚›Example: Water is a compound
of two inflammable gases ,
Hydrogen and Oxygen which
can be used as a rich source of
energy .
RESERVES
ď‚›These are the subset of stock.
ď‚›They can be put in to use with
the help of existing technology
,but their use has not been
started.
ď‚›These can be used to satisfy
future needs.
ď‚›Example: Water in dam, Forest
etc.
FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES
ď‚›Prepare a flow diagram/chart
showing classification of
resources .
ď‚›Write 5 examples each for all
type of resources.
ď‚›Distinguish between Biotic and
Abiotic resources
ď‚›Distinguish between Renewable
and Non Renewable resources.
