The year 2024 has been confirmed as the hottest year ever recorded, with global
average temperatures reaching approximately 1.48°C above pre-industrial levels.
This alarming milestone brings the world dangerously close to the 1.5°C limit set
in the Paris Agreement, highlighting the urgent need for climate action.
2
UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2024 –
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in its Emissions Gap
Report 2024, warns that current global policies fall short of limiting global
warming to 1.5°C, as outlined in the Paris Agreement. The report evaluates the
discrepancy between projected future greenhouse gas emissions and the levels
required to meet global climate targets, stressing the urgent need for stronger
and immediate climate action.

Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam: Nationwide Afforestation Campaign -
India launched a large-scale tree plantation drive titled ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’,
under which 102 crore trees were planted by the end of 2024. The campaign aims to
reach a target of 140 crore trees by March 2025. This initiative is supported by the
National Service Scheme (NSS), a program under the Ministry of Youth Affairs &
Sports, Government of India. NSS mobilizes student volunteers from higher
education institutions to participate in community service and environmental
conservation, promoting awareness and action toward sustainability.
4
Private Sector Entry into Nuclear Energy -
The Government of India is planning to open the nuclear energy sector to private
operators for the first time. This move aims to increase clean energy capacity and
attract private investments by reforming nuclear liability frameworks.Currently,
nuclear energy generation is restricted to state-owned enterprises like NPCIL
(Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd) and NTPC Ltd, as per the provisions of the
Atomic Energy Act, 1962.
