User & Control Plane
UMTS Protocol Stack is categorized into two vertical planes; the control (Signalling) and user
(Data) planes. The MAC and RLC layers exist in both the Control and User planes. The RRC is
present in the Control plane. However BMC and PDCP are present only in the U-plane
Control Plane: The control plane is used to carry all signaling information between the mobile
(UE) and the Network (NW). It is thus also referred to as a signaling plane. Control Channels
are used for signaling information of the control planes
User Plane: The User or data plane is responsible for the transfer of user data, such as voice or
application data.
