Unblocking the brain so you can think creatively

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Creative thinking is often blocked by personal views, values, perceptions and a myriad of other factors. Before the start of any creative thinking process it helps to unblock the brain so that ideas can flow freely.
  • #3: A big blockage is the fear that a wrong, bad or incorrect idea will be given and that we will be judged. There is no write or wrong, there is no good or bad. Any idea that is released from the brain makes way for new and more focused ideas.
  • #4: Coming up with great ideas in isolation is very difficult. Ideas feed idea, and the more you feed other people ideas, the more they will feed yours.
  • #5: Speaking up is often the hardest thing to do when ideas start flowing in a group. The fear blocks any ideas from truly forming, face the fear early on and speak up. It becomes easier as the session goes by.
  • #6: Positive conflict does more for creativity than any other form of idea transference. Don’t shy away from conflict, don’t feel ashamed or bad about the conflict. Positively embrace it and see it for the healthy debate that it is.
  • #7: Don’t take it personal. Don’t make it personal.
  • #8: Often trying to see the point from another view goes far to shape and feed new ideas.
  • #9: We all have different needs, influenced by different cultures and look at the world from a different point of view. Yet we are all working to achieve the same goal. How will your idea be influenced if it was actually on the other side of the world? Just the act of displacing yourself geographically helps with idea generation and clarification.
  • #10: What if your ideas and problems were In the future? How will you overcome them then? What kind of ideas will you have when influenced displacing yourself in time?
  • #11: At this part participants should draw a tree. Theyshould take no more than 5 min.
  • #12: A lot can be said about the trees they draw without a reference to guide them. Most will draw a “symbolic tree”, bubble like leaves with two lines for a trunk. This is what we have been taught a tree looks like. Further analysis can be made of each individual drawing, but that is up to the person running the session.
  • #13: Now given a visual image of a tree, the participantsare asked to “draw this tree”, no mention of the city or shadow is made in the request. Look out for the detail in the leaves that they draw, did they draw the shadow? The city? The sun? further analysis is can be made of each individual drawing if so desired by the presenter.
  • #14: Next we start with some freeform instant captions. Each participant is asked to give a caption of the top of their heads.
  • #15: Freeform captions
  • #16: Freeform captions
  • #17: Freeform captions
  • #18: With this slide we try to get the participants to envision what the possible next slide will be. Have each participant name the next slide.
  • #19: A link has now been made between ice cubes and igloo’s. this is the final exercise and you should be rewarded by some really interesting ways and sales pitches on how to sell ice to eskimo’s
  • #20: Take a 5 min break and then start the meeting or brainstorming session. http:///www.johankruger.infoTwitter: http://twitter.com/#!/socialpond
