WWW-SEARCH ENGINE
• INTRODUCTION:
❖ Search engine came intro existence in 1994.
According to YAHOO Search engine directory-2003,
there are over 448 major search engine.
❖ A SE is a searchable database of internet files collected
by a computer program (called wanderer, crawler, rebot,
worm and spider).
WHAT IS SEARCH ENGINE
❖A Search engine is a coordinated set of programs that searches for
and identifies items in a database that match specified criteria. Search
engines are used to access information on the world wide web.
HISTORY OF SEARCH ENGINES
❖ ARCHIE was the first well developed search engine in the year
1990. It used to search files by matching their names and indexing on
FTP server.
❖ In 1992 VERONICA search engine was developed for GOPHER
based website.
❖ Later in 1993 W3CATALOG and ALIWEB were formed which were
web search engines WEBCRAWLER search engine was the first to
allow users search keywords.
❖ Finally in 1994, the search engine YAHOO wash developed which
gained immense popularity. Earlier it was just a directory but in 1995
search feature was also added.
❖ In 1998 when GOOGLE was founded as till now is the most used
and preferred browser all across the globe . However, there have been
other frequently used search engines formed after google like BAIDU,
BING, YANDEX, etc.
IMPORTANCE OF SEARCH ENGINES
• Search engines are important because with over 8 billion web
pages available, it would be impossible to search for the information
that is specifically needed.
• This is why search engines are used to filter the information that is
on the internet and transform it into results that each individual can
easily access and use within the matter of seconds.
TYPES OF SEARCH ENGINES
• There are three main types of search engine tools:
• Crawler based search engines
• Search directories or indexes
• Hybrid search engines
• Meta search engines
CARWLER BASED SEARCH ENGINES
• These types of search engines
use a SPIDER or a CRAWLER to
the searche the internet .
• The crawler digs through
individual web pages, pulls out
keywords and then adds the
pages to the searches engines
database. GOOGLE and YAHOO
are example of crawler search
engines.
GOOGLE
• GOOGLE was founded by LARRY
PAGE and SERGEY BRIN.
• GOOGLE has various special
features which include weather,
unit conversion, currency
conversion, time, calculator,
maps, etc.
YAHOO
• YAHOO was found by DAVID
FILO and JERRY YANG.
• YAHOO operates a portal that
provides the latest news,
entertainment and sports
information. The portal also
gives users access to other
yahoo services like yahoo mail,
yahoo maps, yahoo finance,
yahoo groups and yahoo
messenger.
DIRECTORIES
• Directories depend on human
editors to create their listings or
the datsabase. YAHOO directory,
OPEN directory and LOOK smart
are few example.
• Human- powered directories
are good when you are
interested in general topic of
search.
HYBRID SEARCH
ENGINES :
Hybrid search engines are
search engines that use
both crawler based
searches and directory
searches to obtain their
result.
Example – yahoo.com
google.com
META SEARCH ENGINE
• A meta search engine is a tool that helps to locate information
available via the WWW.
• It provide a single interface that enable users to search many
different search engines, indexes and database.
• Thus meta search engines are capable of searching several search
engine databases at once.
• Eg..
• Dogpile-http://www.dogpile.com
• Metacrawler-http://www.metacrawler.com
SEARCH ENGINE ARCHITECTURE
• The search engine architecture comprises of the three basic layers
listed below:
• Content collection and refinement.
• Search core.
• User and application interfaces.
HOW TO USE SEARCH ENGINE
• + - A + before a word in a search will locate for documents
which definitely contain the world.
• - - A- before a word will exclude that word from search.
• “ “ – placing words between quotation marks will search
for pharse between the quotes.
• or – Using or between search pharse will search each term
separately

ADVANTAGES OF USING SEARCHENGINE
• Easy to acquire different information from different
topics.
• Determine specifically information.
• Sorting and adding value to the information.
•Facilitates continuous learning by providing access to
diverse knowledge sources.
DISADVANTAGES OF USING SEARCH
ENGINE
• Too many websites visitors.
• Too many websites leads / sales.
•Search engines may display copyrighted content
without proper authorization, leading to legal
concerns.
•Storing massive amounts of user data poses security
risks, as evidenced by potential data breaches.
CONCLUSION
• search engines play a pivotal role in navigating the vast
expanse of information on the internet, serving as
indispensable tools for users worldwide. Their complex
algorithms and continuous evolution reflect the dynamic
nature of the digital landscape. As technology advances, the
future holds exciting possibilities for search engines, promising
enhanced efficiency, personalization, and a more seamless
integration into our daily lives. Ultimately, these digital
gateways empower users to access knowledge, connect with
diverse content, and stay informed in an ever-expanding online
universe.
