NATURAL
RESOURCES
Unit 1: Nothing last
forever...
A resource is anything we get from the
living or nonliving environment to meet
our needs and wants.
 Make a list of the resources you truly need.
 Make another list of the reosurces that you use
each day only because you want them.
 Make a third list of resources you want and
hope to use in the future.
 Name one item that you use every day and
describe how you think that item is made.
A natural resource is any natural material
that is used by humans. Natural resources
include air, soil, minerals, water, oil, plants,
and animals.
How can we categorize natural resources?
 Renewable Resources:
Are natural resources that can be replaced at the
same rate at which it is consumed.
Some renewable resources are considered to be
inexhaustible resources because the resources can
never be used up.
 Nonrenewable Resources:
A resource that forms much more slowly that it is
consumed. Once these resources are used up,
humans will have to find other resources to use
instead.
 List some examples of renewable and nonrenewable
resources.
 Why water and soil can be renewable or
nonrenewable resource?
A material world
 Natural resources that are used to make objects, food, or
drink are called material resources. Material resources can
be either renewable or nonrenewable.
 The cotton used in T-shirts is an example of
_______________.
 The metal used in your desk is an example of a
____________________.
To make food or drink
 List two types of food or drink that are made from
material resourses in each picture:
To make objects
 Any object you see is made from material resources.
For example cars are made of steel, plastic, rubber,
glass and leather.
 Where each material resource cames from? Are the
renewable or nonrenewable resources?
Natural resources used to generate
energy are called energy resources.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
Energy must be converted to be useful.
 What is potential energy? Give examples.
 Which energy conversion allows you to feel warm?
 Which energy conversion allows this lamp to light up
a room?
 Which energy conversion lets you hear the music?
 Think of a natural resource that can be used as both
a material resource and as an energy resource. Draw
two pictures to illustrate each use of the resource.
Research
 How is electrical energy produced?
