Objectives:
At the end of this unit, you should be able
to;
a. give the place value and value of a digit in
numbers up to 100 000;
b. read and write numbers up to a hundred thousand
in symbols and in words;
c. round off numbers to the nearest thousand and
ten thousand; compare numbers up to 100 000 using
relation symbols; and
d. order numbers up to 100 000 in increasing or
decreasing order.

Definition 2.1: Periods are the
sets of three digits into which
numerals are grouped.
The first period is called the ones period. It
is formed with the first three digits of the
number. The second period, called the
thousands period is formed with the next
three digits of the number.

are the number words you need to
be familiar with. Other number
words are just a combination of
these words.

Writing Numbers in Standard and
Expanded Forms
So far, you have learned how to read and write
numbers in words.
154 678 is in standard form, while one hundred
fifty-four thousand, six hundred seventy-eight is
in word form.

Solution: To write a number in expanded
form, we simply find the sum of all the
values of its digits.
