About Japan Japan is an island country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, People's Republic of China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. Japan comprises over 3,000 islands making it an archipelago. The largest islands are Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū and Shikoku, together accounting for 97% of Japan's land area. Most of the islands are mountainous, many volcanic; for example, Japan’s highest peak, Mount Fuji, is a volcano. Japan has the world's tenth largest population, with about 128 million people. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the de facto capital city of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents.
Geography of Japan Japan is a country of over three thousand islands extending along the Pacific coast of Asia. The main islands, running from north to south, are Hokkaidō, Honshū (the main island), Shikoku and Kyūshū. The Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa , are a chain of islands south of Kyushū. Together they are often known as the Japanese Archipelago. The climate of Japan is predominantly temperate, but varies greatly from north to south. The hottest temperature ever measured in Japan — 40.9 degrees Celsius — was recorded on August 16, 2007. The main rainy season begins in early May in Okinawa, and the stationary rain front responsible for this gradually works its way north until it dissipates in northern Japan before reaching Hokkaidō in late July. In most of Honshū, the rainy season begins before the middle of June and lasts about six weeks. In late summer and early autumn, typhoons often bring heavy rain.
Culture of Japan Japanese culture has evolved greatly over the years, from the country's original Jōmon culture to its contemporary culture, which combines influences from Asia, Europe and North America. Traditional Japanese arts include crafts (ikebana, origami, ukiyo-e, dolls, lacquerware, pottery), performances (bunraku, dance, kabuki, noh, rakugo), traditions (games, tea ceremony, Budō, architecture, gardens, swords) and cuisine. The fusion of traditional woodblock printing and Western art led to the creation of manga, a typically Japanese comic book format that is now popular within and outside Japan. Manga-influenced animation for television and film is called anime. Japanese-made video game consoles have prospered since the 1980s.
Japanese food culture The typical Japanese meal consists of a bowl of rice ( gohan ), a bowl of miso soup ( miso shiru ), pickled vegetables ( tsukemono ) and fish or meat. While rice is the staple food, several kinds of noodles ( udon , soba and ramen ) are cheap and very popular for light meals. As an island nation, the Japanese take great pride in their seafood. A wide variety of fish, squid, octopus, eel, and shellfish appear in all kinds of dishes from sushi to tempura.
Shabu Shabu The Japanese word shabu means “swish.” Individual diners cook raw meat slices and vegetables by swishing them around in hot flavoured broth with chopsticks. The cooked meat and vegetables are then dipped a sauce called Ponzu. The broth becomes increasingly flavourful as the meat and veggies are cooked in it so it is served as a soup at the end of the meal. You can buy kombu at Japanese grocery stores. If you put the beef in the freezer for 20 minutes or so before slicing you’ll have an easier time slicing it thinly
Suki Yaki Sukiyaki is usually cooked at the table, and it's common to eat with others from the same pan. Sukiyaki is a typical menu when people gather together in Japan. It's a fun and perfect dish for a party! All you need to do is cut ingredients and place in a large plate and cook in a skillet placed on the table. You don't have to cook in the kitchen, you can cook while you are eating. In different regions of Japan, sukiyaki is cooked differently
YakiSoba Yakisoba is a kind of Japanese fried noodle as yaki means fried in Japanese. Soba indicates noodles. It is a delicious fast food and is a popular lunch menu in Japan. Yakisoba is often sold in vendors and grocery stores in Japan.
Sushi sushi is vinegared rice, usually topped with other ingredients, including fish, various meats, and vegetables. Outside of Japan, sushi is sometimes misunderstood to mean the raw fish itself, or even any fresh raw-seafood dishes. In Japan, sliced raw fish alone is called sashimi and is distinct from sushi, as sashimi is the raw fish component, not the rice component. There are various types of sushi: sushi served rolled inside nori (dried and pressed layer sheets of seaweed or alga) called makizushi or rolls; sushi made with toppings laid with hand-formed clumps of rice called nigirizushi toppings stuffed into a small pouch of fried tofu called inarizushi ; and toppings served scattered over a bowl of sushi rice called chirashi-zushi.
Thank You !
