SLIDE ONE - Pre-Production roles and responsibilities
SLIDE TWO – Pre-Production
Pre-production is the planning stage of the project and involves the process of carefully designing
and planning every aspect of the project in order to create your film, play, or performance. The
pre-production stops when the planning ends and the content for the film can start to be produced.
SLIDE THREE – The Pre-Production Process
The Pre-Production process is outlined below:-
 Choose your topic
 Research your topic – primary and secondary
 Produce the shooting script
 Produce a storyboard to show a visual flow of all the scenes
 Production Role
 Location Recce
 Props/Costumes
 Production Schedule
 Call Sheet
 Risk Assessment
 Production budget
NOTES
 During pre-production, the idea, research and script have been completed and the script is
broken down into individual scenes with the aid of the storyboard.
 All the cast members, locations, props, costumes, special effects and visual effects are
identified.
 An extremely detailed production schedule is produced and arrangements are made for the
necessary elements to be available to the film-makers at the appropriate times.
 Sets are constructed, the crew are hired and financial arrangements are put in place.
 At some point in pre-production there will be a read-through of the script which is usually
attended by all cast members with speaking parts, all heads of departments, financiers,
producers, publicists and of course the director.
SLIDE FOUR - Director
Director’s vision = story’s content + narrative structure + the film’s visual design.
Responsible for:-
 Storytelling with Scriptwriter
 Creative decisions
 Oversees Actor within the film
 Works with Production Designer to create the sets, props, and costumes
SLIDE FIVE - Producer
 Hires Actor to play victim in murder scene in the film
 Production Budget
 Production Schedule
 Oversee Pre-Production
 Completes all paperwork
SLIDE SIX - Scriptwriter
 Imagines the world through words by creating the script
Storyboard Artist
 Creates the storyboard to help the Director and Production Designer express their ideas to
the production team
SLIDE SEVEN - Assistant Director
 Manages the shooting schedule
Casting director
 Scouts Actor to play victim in murder scene in the film
 Organises actor throughout filming
Location Manager
 Locates and manages when filming ‘on- location’
SLIDE EIGHT -
Sound Engineer
 Supervises the sound of the entire film
Production Designer
Are part historian, artist, and architect and creates the visual conception of the film, by turning
words and the director’s ideas into reality, covering:-
 Drawing
 Painting
 Finding reference for major sets
 Costumes
 Buildings
 Vehicles
 Characters
SLIDE NINE -
Art Director
 Supervises creation of the production sets
Costume Designer
 Ensures all the clothing for the characters is authentic
 Oversee fittings
 Continuity in costume, hair and make-up throughout the production
Choreographer
 Creates all the moves, dance and stunts – I shall be co-ordinating the fight scene and all
my walking scenes
SLIDE TEN – Summary
All roles and responsibilities will be completed by me, except for a cameo role for the victim.
