READING LINK :
When I was a child, homework was the cause of many arguments between my
parents. My mother believed that doing homework was the only way for us to make progress.
My father, on the other hand, thought we should have learned everything we needed to know
while we were in school.
It is true to say, though, that most students don’t want to hear anything about
homework. In this age of leisure it seems inhuman to expect our young people to do four or
five hours of homework while their parents are watching TV. We know that by the time they
finish their homework, they will have missed all the interesting shows.
As a result of recent research, many experts believe that homework is a complete
waste of time, especially when many children appear to get their homework done by someone
else. In fact, some people say that the only positive result of giving homework is that children
become very creative in finding new excuses for not having done it.
Apart from parents and people in education, there are other people who suggest
that school should be like a modern business. Most good managers do not take their work
home, but manage their time and complete their work during their working hours.
Personally, I think that a simple change in the schedule at school would allow
children to do individual work with a teacher around to help, if needed. Teachers wouldn’t feel
so tired as there would be less grading and students would have a better balance between
study and free times.
Have you finished Your Homework?

INSERT THE MISSING PARAGRAPHS IN THE SPACES PROVIDED IN TASK B.(ONE OF THEM SIS
EXTRA AND WILL NOT BE USED. )
A.
Other experts would disagree. Saying that it is good
for education to be continues at home and for
parents to be involved. They think that it is good for
children
to work alone and to try to practice what they are
supposed to have learned in class.
B.
So, why can’t children and teachers do the same?
Imagine a life without homework. You would need
fewer books and you would spend less energy on
moving all their heavy books from one place to
another. Not only that, a lot of time would be saved.
C.
Homework gives both teachers and students a
Headache. By next September I will have been
teaching at the same school for 19 years. I have seen
that the teacher has two types of problem. First, I
ness to make sure that the homework is done, and in
a way that is readable. Second, teachers continue to
make complaints about the number of books they
have to carry from school to home and back again.
D.
I have to admit my mother was right. When you didn’t
do your homework, you were the first to suffer.
Teachers found ways of making you feel silly in front
of your classmates, and parents even tried to stop
their children’s allowances.
E.
Don’t think that parents like the idea of homework,
either! They don’t. In our fast moving world most
parents are now faced with the problem of not being
able to understand what their children are learning.
These parents prefer to listen to opinion that says to
leave the homework at school.
F.
Unfortunately, as the world becomes more and more
competitive, it seems that homework is here to stay.
Perhaps future students will find a way to get their
computers to do their homework for them!
