in the interview to prove that it is
casual and goes with the flow.
Permission needed
Contact needed to be made (Evidence
of this?)
I need to make sure that I get permission for this
image this is because I need to be sure that who I
am using for the photo will give me permission to
take the photo.

Potential Hazards/Risks
Location specific
Why?
Room Might be in use for when I need to take the
shot so need to re-arrange the time and date of the
shot.
Screws/nails in the wall, loose bricks so
need to test the wall before shooting
pictures to decrease the risk of injury.
Weather can be another risk because if it
pouring down with rain then the shot
cannot be taken and prevents any harm to
the artist (e.g. lightning)

Format:
The magazine will be a print based magazine. The
dimensions of A4 is 297 x 210 mm. However the print
based dimensions will be 247 x 170 mm as that is the
regular print size for A4 magazines.

The colour scheme which I am going to use for the front
cover of my magazine will be a Black/grey background
with a Bold, red headline will a yellow drop shadow in
the foreground, however across each of the pages such
as the DPS I will use the colours Black as a background
for half the page, turquoise highlighted text in certain
areas and white text on top of the black background to
create contrasts. I choose to ‘Repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980)
the same colour scheme as from my magazine of
inspiration which is Kerrang!. I am going to achieve the
same colour scheme through the magazine by using a
tool called the ‘eye dropper’ in Adobe Photoshop. This is
because the eye dropper can get the exact colour from
an image and apply the same colour to a design or
product which has been created on Photoshop.

Double-page spread (DPS)
Age and Gender (Target Audience)
• According to Hartley’s 7 subjectives, the target gender of my magazine are mainly male, however the
female reading is close as the target audience so therefore the magazine is for old teenagers and young
adults this is the main age at which people of that audience listen and like the music. I choose to use the
same target audience to aim to get my magazine to that same consumer as those ofKerrang!.
• On the other hand my magazine will have the ability to inform and educate (Katz) to the audience about
the bands by the use of bold, in your face pictures and simple info the determine the outcome of the
article or story. Therefore will appeal to young ages because they are wanting to get the backstage
information. So by looking at top rock magazines such as Kerrang! Informing and educate from Katz allows
me to research certain types of language styles and pictures which can educate the consumer as well as
get them to like my magazine.
• Finally for the audience of my magazine they fit into the category of “explorers and caregivers” (Maslow).
To get explorers from Maslow's theory from the outcome of my magazine I need to make sure that I
contain pictures which are in different environments and different types of actions to engage the reader.
However to get caregivers I need to produce in my magazine language styles in the likes of 1st and 3rd
person so the reader feels like they are in the same situation as the vocalist or and and start to feel their
exact emotions from the interview.
• Psychographics
• Aspirer – the general psychographics for my mgaazine would be aspirers and explorers. In order to make
my magazine similar to that of my inspirational magazine Kerrang! I need to make sure that to get the
readers to become aspirers, I need to make sure I include some competitions in my magazine to win Vans
and/or specific brands which are well known. However to make sure the consumers become explorers I
need to introduce some new band pictures, and more vocalist pictures to get the reader engaged in the
hardback magazine and also include some reason for getting them to buy the magazine by the use of free
inserts or posters of certain bands or vocalists.
Hand drawn drafts of front cover and
DPS
The mast head of my magazine is going
to be in this type
of font style called Shut’Em down from
dafont. I am going to make the masthead
red in this font style as it conveys how
heavy rock is and that extreme rock will
start to cause havoc in the likes of mosh
pits and violence.
For the front cover main image their will be 3
top artists from 3 of the top rock bands with the
most known artist at the front in a casual style,
the second most popular on the left in dark
clothes and the 3rd artist on the right looking
towards the top artist at an angle to convey the
effects of role models and how well known the
band members are.
The main headline I have chosen is “Inside The
Lyrics! Rock’s biggest stars on the real stories
behind the songs”. The main headline is in a bold
font style with contrasting colours which express
emotions and themes to what's inside. However
the headline looks like circus writing and this
conveys that the unexpected will happen in the
magazine and random things will pop out from
the articles such as tours, prizes, pictures and
articles.
By having posters expressed on the front cover, conveys the fact that you get
them free within the magazine and that they are of most popular band members
or bands. By having this suggests that more people will buy the magazine to get
the posters out and read through the articles before the posters appear.
By having puff promotions expressed on the
front cover, conveys the fact that you have
the opportunity to win prizes in the form of
Win!... Within the magazine causes the
reader to read through it to get to the
competition page. By having this suggests
that more people will buy the magazine to
get the chance to win prizes and read
through and take in the articles before the
competition pages appear.
The barcode is on the left hand side which
conveys the fact that it is on the seam of
the magazine and will force you to take
the magazine out to see the barcode
which makes you see the front cover and
images displayed.
The main headline for my
article/interview I have chosen is
“The Resurrection of Rock” in the
Cooper black font. The main
headline is in a bold font style with
contrasting colours (read and
yellow headline on a white
background) which expresses the
emotions and themes to what's
imbedded within the
article/interview.
The standfirst for my double-
page spread (DPS) is going to be
“For the past two years, Black
Veil Brides have resided in the
dystopian world of the wild ones.
Now, though, they’re ready to
rewrite rock’s rule book. And all
Andy Biersack needed to do was
question everything…”. The font
will be black with red highlighted
key words to contrast to the
white background and create a
visual appeal to the reader
forcing them to read the
standfirst and the interview. The
highlighted words convey who
the band artist is being
interviewed and the band which
he is in.
For the main image I am going to take a picture of the artist with one
hand towards the camera whilst scrunching up a piece of paper. This
will convey the inside setting of the surrounding area and the type of
mood which the artist had during the process in writing the songs. So
by having the artist wear casual clothes in a quiet writing environment
conveys isolation and that the band cares and take pride in their song
lyrics.
The interview, I have decided to
place on the right page of the
double page spread in small, split
columns with red questions and
black font answers to contrast to
the white background, I also am
going to contain an abbreviated
quote so that this is because it
splits up the pages nicely and is
clearly displayed so easier to read,
which means that by having the
main written language of the
article/interview on one side of
the page and the non-
verbal/verbal codes such as the
image on the other side and main
headline and the standfirst to
convey the importance of the
interview to the artist and also
gives the reader time to reflect on
the interview by looking at the
image and makes the reader want
to read on.
The page number I have decided to choose for this DPS is
pages 20-21 because that’s where the main article/interview
is based in an issue of Kerrang! Therefore by choosing to
‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) a similar page number from that
issue conveys importance of the main article/interview and
what content should be based before as a build up to the
main article/interview. However I have also chosen to
‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) the brand identity masthead
name by the page number to convey realism and gets the
reader to be able to search up the name of the magazine on
social media.
In the bottom right corner of the
DPS I will have an image of the band
to convey what will be contained
about the band in the main
article/interview.
For the front cover main image their will
be 1 top artist from one of the top rock
bands in this case Black Veil Brides with
the artist looking towards the reader
straight on to convey the effects of rock
and the impact it can have on the reader.
The main headline I have chosen is
“Black Veil Brides”. The main
headline is in a bold font style with
bright contrasting colours to the
background which express emotions
and themes to what's inside.
However the headline looks bold and
catchy which conveys that the main
article/interview is going to have
truth and some happiness to it.
By having posters expressed on the
front cover on the left hand side by
the seam, conveys the fact that you
get them free within the magazine and
that they are of most popular band
members or bands. By having this on
the left suggests that more people will
buy the magazine and open the pages
to get the posters out and read
through the articles before the posters
appear.
The mast head of my magazine is going
to be in this type
of font style called Shut’Em down from
dafont. I am going to make the masthead
white in this font style so it contrasts
with the black from the background as it
conveys how heavy rock is and that
extreme rock will start to cause havoc in
the likes of mosh pits and violence.
The barcode is on the right hand side
which conveys the fact that it is on the
opening page of the magazine and will
force you to take the magazine out to see
the barcode which makes you see the
front cover and images displayed.
By having puff promotions expressed
on the front cover, conveys the fact
that you have the opportunity to win
prizes in the form of Win!... Within
the magazine which causes the reader
to read through it to get to the
competition page. By having this
suggests that more people will buy
the magazine to get the chance to win
prizes and read through and take in
the articles before the competition
pages appear.
For the strapline I have chosen “Obey The Past, Present and Future of Rock!, I have followed a similar strapline to
another magazine of my sub-genre in the likes of NME. My strapline conveys the fact that rock will never get old and
in its generation it will have big all time hits. However conveys what artists and bands are in the magazine due to the
strapline saying “Past, Present and Future..” so therefore suggests that rock bands and artists are contained within the
magazine from the past, now in the present and future stars and bands.
The main headline for my
article/interview I have chosen is
“The Resurrection of Rock”, the “The
and Of” are in the Vivaldi font and
the “Resurrection” in the broken
Detroit font from DaFont. The main
headline is in a bold, slim font style
with contrasting colours (White
headline on black background) which
expresses the emotions and themes
to what's imbedded within the
article/interview.
The standfirst for my double-page
spread (DPS) is going to be “For the
past two years, Black Veil Brides
have resided in the dystopian world
of the wild ones. Now, though,
they’re ready to rewrite rock’s rule
book. And all Andy Biersack needed
to do was question everything…”.
The font will be white with sky blue
highlighted key words to contrast
and create a visual appeal to the
reader forcing them to read the
standfirst and the interview. The
highlighted words convey who the
band artist is being interviewed and
the band which he is in.
The interview, I have decided to place in the bottom half of the
left page of the double page spread in a small slim, white font to
contrast to the black background, this is because it splits up the
pages nicely so all the written language is on one side of the
page and the non-verbal codes such as the image on the other
however I have an abbreviated quote being placed on the right
page as a little verbal code to convey the importance of the
interview to the artist and also gives the reader time to reflect
on the interview by looking at the image and makes the reader
want to read on.
For the main image I am going to take a picture of the artist with one
hand leaning casually on the side of a wall/fence. This will convey the
rural setting of the surround area and the type of mood the interview
will convey throughout, so by having the artist wear black clothes in a
quiet surrounding conveys isolation and that the band sticks out from
the others to cause competition.
The page number I have decided to
choose for the DPS is pages 18-19
because that’s where the main
article/interview is based in an issue
of Kerrang! Therefore by choosing
to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) it
from that issue conveys importance
of the main article/interview and
what content should be based
before as a build up to the main
article/interview. However I have
also chosen to ‘repeat’ (Steve
Neale-1980) the brand identity
masthead name by the page
number to convey realism and gets
the reader to be able to search up
the name of the magazine on social
media.
Test photography
For a part of test photography I
had used a deodorant can instead
of a microphone to see what type
of image would look best on the
front cover, therefore for further
parts of my development I had a
microphone to look more
professional and suitable for the
genre.
For the front cover main image their will

bands in this case Black Veil Brides with
the artist looking towards the reader
straight on to convey the effects of rock
and the impact it can have on the reader.

The cover lines I have situated on the right
hand side of the page so they are away
from the main headline and stand out from
the rest of the page as they are in bright
colours and bold fonts.

Conclusion
• What went well?
• Through this learning outcome I have learnt how to analyse magazine pages properly and
how beneficial it is when making my own magazine, with the different codes and conventions
as well as using different layouts and designs.
• Another part that went well was that I was able to analyse the test ideas on Photoshop for
my magazine and also was able to test different images for the pages and different types of
codes and conventions.
• Even better if?
• Another thing which I could improve on is the layout of my work, even though my work is all
in the PowerPoint from the learning objectives it can get a bit muddled so spreading it out
and less clumped together will make my work more clear and easy to understand.
• Finally the last improvement which I could have done was to keep asking Mr Crafts to check
my work and make sure it has been completed to a distinction standard so that I can move on
to the next learning outcome.

  • 2. 1. Location 2. Time 3. Date 4. Why? 1. White room 2. 3pm 3. 8/11/14 4. Because I can crop out the white background easily to just get the person when making my front cover. 1. Friends back garden 2. 4pm 3. 8/11/14 4. Because it has the rural scenery of the picture from my magazine of inspiration (Kerrang!)DPS. 1. Picture needed/required 2. Shot type 3. Props/Equipment 4. Lighting 5. Costume 6. Person/people 7. Why? 1. Screaming into a microphone 2. Medium close-up 3. Camera, microphone 4. Middle key lighting 5. Dark tank top 6. Me 7. Because it releases the feeling of emotions and shows the reader from the front cover that the stories are going to be hard-core and break the barrier. 1. Leaning on the side of the wall 2. Medium shot 3. Camera 4. Middle key lighting 5. Dark tank top, Black jeans, Dog tag. 6. Me 7. Because I need to prove the real emotions upon the reader from the picture which relates to the content in the interview to prove that it is casual and goes with the flow. Permission needed Contact needed to be made (Evidence of this?) I need to make sure that I get permission for this image this is because I need to be sure that who I am using for the photo will give me permission to take the photo. (See next slide) I need to make sure that I get permission for this image this is because I need to be sure that who I am using for the photo will give me permission to take the photo. (See next slide) Potential Hazards/Risks Location specific Why? Room Might be in use for when I need to take the shot so need to re-arrange the time and date of the shot. Screws/nails in the wall, loose bricks so need to test the wall before shooting pictures to decrease the risk of injury. Weather can be another risk because if it pouring down with rain then the shot cannot be taken and prevents any harm to the artist (e.g. lightning) Plans for images
  • 5. Style Format: The magazine will be a print based magazine. The dimensions of A4 is 297 x 210 mm. However the print based dimensions will be 247 x 170 mm as that is the regular print size for A4 magazines. Source: http://www.all-size-paper.com/A4/a4-paper- size.php The colour scheme which I am going to use for the front cover of my magazine will be a Black/grey background with a Bold, red headline will a yellow drop shadow in the foreground, however across each of the pages such as the DPS I will use the colours Black as a background for half the page, turquoise highlighted text in certain areas and white text on top of the black background to create contrasts. I choose to ‘Repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) the same colour scheme as from my magazine of inspiration which is Kerrang!. I am going to achieve the same colour scheme through the magazine by using a tool called the ‘eye dropper’ in Adobe Photoshop. This is because the eye dropper can get the exact colour from an image and apply the same colour to a design or product which has been created on Photoshop. Front Cover Double-page spread (DPS)
  • 6. Age and Gender (Target Audience) • According to Hartley’s 7 subjectives, the target gender of my magazine are mainly male, however the female reading is close as the target audience so therefore the magazine is for old teenagers and young adults this is the main age at which people of that audience listen and like the music. I choose to use the same target audience to aim to get my magazine to that same consumer as those ofKerrang!. • On the other hand my magazine will have the ability to inform and educate (Katz) to the audience about the bands by the use of bold, in your face pictures and simple info the determine the outcome of the article or story. Therefore will appeal to young ages because they are wanting to get the backstage information. So by looking at top rock magazines such as Kerrang! Informing and educate from Katz allows me to research certain types of language styles and pictures which can educate the consumer as well as get them to like my magazine. • Finally for the audience of my magazine they fit into the category of “explorers and caregivers” (Maslow). To get explorers from Maslow's theory from the outcome of my magazine I need to make sure that I contain pictures which are in different environments and different types of actions to engage the reader. However to get caregivers I need to produce in my magazine language styles in the likes of 1st and 3rd person so the reader feels like they are in the same situation as the vocalist or and and start to feel their exact emotions from the interview. • Psychographics • Aspirer – the general psychographics for my mgaazine would be aspirers and explorers. In order to make my magazine similar to that of my inspirational magazine Kerrang! I need to make sure that to get the readers to become aspirers, I need to make sure I include some competitions in my magazine to win Vans and/or specific brands which are well known. However to make sure the consumers become explorers I need to introduce some new band pictures, and more vocalist pictures to get the reader engaged in the hardback magazine and also include some reason for getting them to buy the magazine by the use of free inserts or posters of certain bands or vocalists.
  • 7. Hand drawn drafts of front cover and DPS The mast head of my magazine is going to be in this type of font style called Shut’Em down from dafont. I am going to make the masthead red in this font style as it conveys how heavy rock is and that extreme rock will start to cause havoc in the likes of mosh pits and violence. For the front cover main image their will be 3 top artists from 3 of the top rock bands with the most known artist at the front in a casual style, the second most popular on the left in dark clothes and the 3rd artist on the right looking towards the top artist at an angle to convey the effects of role models and how well known the band members are. The main headline I have chosen is “Inside The Lyrics! Rock’s biggest stars on the real stories behind the songs”. The main headline is in a bold font style with contrasting colours which express emotions and themes to what's inside. However the headline looks like circus writing and this conveys that the unexpected will happen in the magazine and random things will pop out from the articles such as tours, prizes, pictures and articles. By having posters expressed on the front cover, conveys the fact that you get them free within the magazine and that they are of most popular band members or bands. By having this suggests that more people will buy the magazine to get the posters out and read through the articles before the posters appear. By having puff promotions expressed on the front cover, conveys the fact that you have the opportunity to win prizes in the form of Win!... Within the magazine causes the reader to read through it to get to the competition page. By having this suggests that more people will buy the magazine to get the chance to win prizes and read through and take in the articles before the competition pages appear. The barcode is on the left hand side which conveys the fact that it is on the seam of the magazine and will force you to take the magazine out to see the barcode which makes you see the front cover and images displayed.
  • 8. The main headline for my article/interview I have chosen is “The Resurrection of Rock” in the Cooper black font. The main headline is in a bold font style with contrasting colours (read and yellow headline on a white background) which expresses the emotions and themes to what's imbedded within the article/interview. The standfirst for my double- page spread (DPS) is going to be “For the past two years, Black Veil Brides have resided in the dystopian world of the wild ones. Now, though, they’re ready to rewrite rock’s rule book. And all Andy Biersack needed to do was question everything…”. The font will be black with red highlighted key words to contrast to the white background and create a visual appeal to the reader forcing them to read the standfirst and the interview. The highlighted words convey who the band artist is being interviewed and the band which he is in. For the main image I am going to take a picture of the artist with one hand towards the camera whilst scrunching up a piece of paper. This will convey the inside setting of the surrounding area and the type of mood which the artist had during the process in writing the songs. So by having the artist wear casual clothes in a quiet writing environment conveys isolation and that the band cares and take pride in their song lyrics. The interview, I have decided to place on the right page of the double page spread in small, split columns with red questions and black font answers to contrast to the white background, I also am going to contain an abbreviated quote so that this is because it splits up the pages nicely and is clearly displayed so easier to read, which means that by having the main written language of the article/interview on one side of the page and the non- verbal/verbal codes such as the image on the other side and main headline and the standfirst to convey the importance of the interview to the artist and also gives the reader time to reflect on the interview by looking at the image and makes the reader want to read on. The page number I have decided to choose for this DPS is pages 20-21 because that’s where the main article/interview is based in an issue of Kerrang! Therefore by choosing to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) a similar page number from that issue conveys importance of the main article/interview and what content should be based before as a build up to the main article/interview. However I have also chosen to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) the brand identity masthead name by the page number to convey realism and gets the reader to be able to search up the name of the magazine on social media. In the bottom right corner of the DPS I will have an image of the band to convey what will be contained about the band in the main article/interview.
  • 9. For the front cover main image their will be 1 top artist from one of the top rock bands in this case Black Veil Brides with the artist looking towards the reader straight on to convey the effects of rock and the impact it can have on the reader. The main headline I have chosen is “Black Veil Brides”. The main headline is in a bold font style with bright contrasting colours to the background which express emotions and themes to what's inside. However the headline looks bold and catchy which conveys that the main article/interview is going to have truth and some happiness to it. By having posters expressed on the front cover on the left hand side by the seam, conveys the fact that you get them free within the magazine and that they are of most popular band members or bands. By having this on the left suggests that more people will buy the magazine and open the pages to get the posters out and read through the articles before the posters appear. The mast head of my magazine is going to be in this type of font style called Shut’Em down from dafont. I am going to make the masthead white in this font style so it contrasts with the black from the background as it conveys how heavy rock is and that extreme rock will start to cause havoc in the likes of mosh pits and violence. The barcode is on the right hand side which conveys the fact that it is on the opening page of the magazine and will force you to take the magazine out to see the barcode which makes you see the front cover and images displayed. By having puff promotions expressed on the front cover, conveys the fact that you have the opportunity to win prizes in the form of Win!... Within the magazine which causes the reader to read through it to get to the competition page. By having this suggests that more people will buy the magazine to get the chance to win prizes and read through and take in the articles before the competition pages appear. For the strapline I have chosen “Obey The Past, Present and Future of Rock!, I have followed a similar strapline to another magazine of my sub-genre in the likes of NME. My strapline conveys the fact that rock will never get old and in its generation it will have big all time hits. However conveys what artists and bands are in the magazine due to the strapline saying “Past, Present and Future..” so therefore suggests that rock bands and artists are contained within the magazine from the past, now in the present and future stars and bands.
  • 10. The main headline for my article/interview I have chosen is “The Resurrection of Rock”, the “The and Of” are in the Vivaldi font and the “Resurrection” in the broken Detroit font from DaFont. The main headline is in a bold, slim font style with contrasting colours (White headline on black background) which expresses the emotions and themes to what's imbedded within the article/interview. The standfirst for my double-page spread (DPS) is going to be “For the past two years, Black Veil Brides have resided in the dystopian world of the wild ones. Now, though, they’re ready to rewrite rock’s rule book. And all Andy Biersack needed to do was question everything…”. The font will be white with sky blue highlighted key words to contrast and create a visual appeal to the reader forcing them to read the standfirst and the interview. The highlighted words convey who the band artist is being interviewed and the band which he is in. The interview, I have decided to place in the bottom half of the left page of the double page spread in a small slim, white font to contrast to the black background, this is because it splits up the pages nicely so all the written language is on one side of the page and the non-verbal codes such as the image on the other however I have an abbreviated quote being placed on the right page as a little verbal code to convey the importance of the interview to the artist and also gives the reader time to reflect on the interview by looking at the image and makes the reader want to read on. For the main image I am going to take a picture of the artist with one hand leaning casually on the side of a wall/fence. This will convey the rural setting of the surround area and the type of mood the interview will convey throughout, so by having the artist wear black clothes in a quiet surrounding conveys isolation and that the band sticks out from the others to cause competition. The page number I have decided to choose for the DPS is pages 18-19 because that’s where the main article/interview is based in an issue of Kerrang! Therefore by choosing to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) it from that issue conveys importance of the main article/interview and what content should be based before as a build up to the main article/interview. However I have also chosen to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) the brand identity masthead name by the page number to convey realism and gets the reader to be able to search up the name of the magazine on social media.
  • 11. Test photography For a part of test photography I had used a deodorant can instead of a microphone to see what type of image would look best on the front cover, therefore for further parts of my development I had a microphone to look more professional and suitable for the genre.

  • 17. Conclusion • What went well? • Through this learning outcome I have learnt how to analyse magazine pages properly and how beneficial it is when making my own magazine, with the different codes and conventions as well as using different layouts and designs. • Another part that went well was that I was able to analyse the test ideas on Photoshop for my magazine and also was able to test different images for the pages and different types of codes and conventions. • Even better if? • Another thing which I could improve on is the layout of my work, even though my work is all in the PowerPoint from the learning objectives it can get a bit muddled so spreading it out and less clumped together will make my work more clear and easy to understand. • Finally the last improvement which I could have done was to keep asking Mr Crafts to check my work and make sure it has been completed to a distinction standard so that I can move on to the next learning outcome.
