LET’S LEARN THE SUPERLATIVE FORM
Superlative adjectives are used to describe an object which is at the upper
or lower limit of a quality (the tallest, the smallest, the fastest, the
highest). They are used in sentences where a subject is compared to a
group of objects.
The group that is being compared with can be omitted if it is clear from
the context (final example below).
Examples:
 My house is the largest one in our neighborhood.
 This is the smallest box I've ever seen.
 Your dog ran the fastest of any dog in the race.
 We all threw our rocks at the same time. My rock flew the highest.
("of all the rocks" is understood)
Forming comparatives and superlatives
Forming comparatives and superlatives is easy. The form depends on the
number of syllables in the original adjective. Add -est for the superlative. If
the adjective has a consonant + single vowel + consonant spelling, the
final consonant must be doubled before adding the ending.
One syllable
Adjective Comparative Superlative
tall Taller than The tallest
fat fatter than The fattest
big bigger than The biggest
sad sadder than The saddest
long longer than The longest
Two or more syllables
Adjective Comparative Superlative
happy happier than The happiest
simple simpler than The simplest
busy busier than The busiest
grumpy grumpier than The grumpiest
smart smarter than The smartest
Noun (subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective + noun (object).
Page 6
Adjectives with three or more syllables form the superlative by
putting most in front.
Three or more syllables
Adjective Comparative Superlative
important more important than The most important
expensive more expensive than The most expensive
elegant more elegant than The most elegant
dangerous more dangerous than The most dangerous
embarrassed more embarrassed than Themost embarrassed
Finally, these very common adjectives have completely irregular
superlative forms.
Irregular adjectives
Adjective Comparative Superlative
good better best
bad worse worst
little less least
much more most
far further / farther The furthest /
farthest
For example:
 Today is the worst day I've had in a long time.
 This is the least expensive sweater in the store.
Write a sentence using a superlative form. It must be about you.
 _____________________________________________________
Page 7
PRACTICE!

Vicky ______________________. (slim)
Fiona ______________________. (attractive)
