Unit 33 Stop Motion Animation Task 4
Review of Work
Why is it important to evaluate a project?
I completed a short animation in stop motion animation using Barbie and Ken
characters. I believe it is important to evaluate work in order to think through the
process, establish what has been completed and by whom and also to discover the
strengths, weaknesses and new experiences gained from each project. It is also
important to learn the views of others and establish whether the views, in my opinion
are helpful and valid to aid further work, or whether I would disagree with the
comments of others. Overall, I think it is important to have this process.
How does your final animation compare with the original storyboard/mind
map?
I think my animation is a good representation of my original storyboard and mind
map idea and was better than I thought it would be. I believe this was due to my
thorough planning and strong idea from the beginning, as I knew what I wanted to
produce and how I wanted to achieve this. I also had a good mix of close up and mid
shots to keep the animation interesting.
Are you happy with the technical quality (style, visual quality, edit)? If not,
what could be improved?
I was happy with the technical quality of my animation and believe the style was in
keeping with the image of Barbie and I completed the best quality that I could. I
added music called Barbie Girl, that was relevant to Barbie and I was happy with the
edited version of my animation.
Did the team function well?
All of unit 33 was completed solely by me. Although it was a vast amount of work in a
short space of time, I enjoyed working on this project because it was something that I
would not normally produce. I managed to create detailed storyboards and had a
clear vision that helped achieve the end result.
Evaluate your animation’s contribution to the project. What you did well and
what could be improved?
As mine was the only project and completed solely be me, I believe that the
movement of Barbie and Ken was realistic and gave them a real humanoid quality. I
had my camera set on my tripod in the same location in a stationery position to avoid
any difference to the animation. I think that my not moving the camera gave the
animation a better quality finish and it appeared more professional. I also think that
by Barbie lying on the floor and swirling 360 degrees to the music matched the
impression of the song that Barbie was having fun and wanted to party. I also tried to
achieve this by Barbie sitting on the bonnet of Ken’s car. I was also pleased with the
fact that Barbie and Ken moved to the beat of the music and when they were talking,
I moved their heads from side to side to give the impression that they were talking to
ensure it was more convincing to the audience. To improve my animation I would
have used a different Ken, as it was difficult to move his hand realistically to the
music. I would have also used more than one background, rather than just the pink
background, to ensure the audience was more engaged in the animation. Overall, I
am very pleased with the end result, learnt new skills in stop animation and enjoyed
the whole process.
Did the animation meet the audience’s needs?
I believe my animation did meet the needs of the audience as my feedback was very
positive and they liked my animation. I kept my target audience of 4 – 30 years old in
my mind as I produced the animation. Because it would have such a wide ranging
age group, I tried to keep my animation fun and happy to give the illusion of Barbie
being a party girl. I believe I achieved this through the different camera angles and
different amount of scenes, interesting shots of Barbie swapping her clothes and
sitting on the bonnet of a car and moving her head to the music when she was
talking. I kept the animation within the timescales set out in the brief but felt that I
could have produced a longer animation without it becoming boring.
