Joseph has returned home without leave to see his daughter Alice, who is gravely ill. He and his wife Annie stay by Alice's side until she passes. Joseph must now return to the front, though it is difficult to leave his family. Annie struggles as a single mother coping with two young daughters and the loss of Alice while Joseph is at war. Joseph is changed by his experiences in the war and suffers from nightmares and rage when he returns. Annie and Joseph reflect on the loss of their daughter Alice and the challenges of wartime.
