Superlatives
Superlatives
Superlatives are used to show the difference between
more than two objects.
Let’s compare three cars: a small Matiz, a medium size SM5 and
a big Equus.
The Equus is big so we can say, “The Equus is the biggest.”
Because the Matiz is small, we can say, “The Matiz is the smallest.”
To learn to use superlatives with adjectives, we need to learn
5basic Rules.
The ant is the smallest.
• Rule 1. If an adjective has 1 syllable, we
add the ending –est to the adjective.
small + est = the smallest
long + est = the longest
The hippo is the fattest.
• Rule 2. If a one syllable adjective ends with
a consonant + a vowel + a consonant
you must double the last consonant and
add –est.
big + est = the biggest
fat + est = the fattest
The elephant is the heaviest.
• Rule 3. If an adjective ends with a “y”,
remove the “y” and add –iest.
heavy –y + iest = the heaviest
funny –y + iest = the funniest
The airplane is the most expensive.
• Rule 4. If an adjective has two syllables or
more, add the word “the most” before the
word.
beautiful = the most beautiful
expensive = the most expensive
satisfactory = the most satisfactory
• Rule 5. There are a few exceptions.
good = the best
bad = the worst
far = the farthest, the furthest
• Remember, when using a superlative you must always precede it
with the word “the”.
The Matiz is the smallest.
The Equus is the biggest.
Brad Pitt is the most handsome.
The airplane is the most expensive.
Jim Carrey is the funniest.
Common Mistakes!!!
good . . . the goodest
bad . . . the baddest
fat . . . the most fattest
beautiful . . . the beautifullest
• Use the most… to express the superlative with nouns.
Java has the most people of all the islands in Indonesia.
Bali gets the most sunshine in the dry season.
