Meaning of “used to + verb” = an action or habit that was common
in the past but not anymore
(discontinued action or habit)
She used to study all the time when she was in high school.
I used to speak French very well, but now I can’t.
He used to be fat and lazy, but he is trim and fit these days.
Used to vs. Use to
Notice how used to ends in –ed which normally means the verb is in
the past tense.
Used to in Positive Sentences (used to + verb base)
I used to drink coffee every morning but now I drink tea.
She used to live in London but now she lives in New York.
He used to play soccer professionally but he had to retire.
Used to in Negative Sentences (didn’t + use to + verb base)
She didn’t use to exercise at all, but she runs marathons now.
They didn’t use to want a big house, but they want one now
because they have four kids.
I didn’t use to like vegetables as a kid, but now I love all kinds of vegetables.
Used to in Questions (did + subject + use to + verb base)
Did you use to ride the school bus?
What did he use to do after school?
Where did they use to go on family vacations?
Compare Simple Past vs. Used to
