babies and young children

relation to nappy changing
• Demonstrate how to change a nappy

Active Learning
• In small groups change a nappy.
• You will then need to write this up on your

What does nappy rash look like
How can we treat nappy rash?
To prevent nappy rash
• Change wet or soiled nappies as soon as possible.
Young babies need changing as many as 10 or 12 times
a day; older babies at least six to eight times.
• Clean the whole nappy area thoroughly, wiping from
front to back. Use plain water, cotton wool or baby
wipes.
• Lie your baby on a towel and leave the nappy off for as
long and as often as you can in order to let fresh air get
to the skin.
• Use a barrier cream, such as zinc and castor oil or
Sudacrem

encourage children to look after
their teeth?

Facts
Once teeth begin erupting, you can begin
cleaning them by wiping them with a moist
washcloth.
As the child gets more teeth, you can begin to
use a soft child's toothbrush.
You should use just a pea-sized amount of a
fluoride toothpaste or a non-fluoride
toothpaste until your child is able to spit it out,
too much fluoride can stain their teeth.
Children should be supervised up to the age of
seven
