Graphing Linear Equations Kitwana Carter Wenonah High School Birmingham City Mathematics Instructor Algebra I: 9 th -10 th
Unit Summary This unit will infuse technology to help students be more comfortable with graphing linear equations. Using the results from the past two years of the Alabama High School Graduation, almost 100 % of students have not mastered graphing linear equations and translating verbal models.
Graphing Linear Equations Essential Question: Can everything that occurs be put into plain words? Unit Questions: Is graphing important or would we be better off without it? Content Questions: What are some examples of graphs used in your everyday life? What is essential knowledge is needed in order to display graphs? What are the ways that linear equations can be graphed?
Student Objectives Students will: Graph linear equations using tables or a list of values. Graph linear equations using computer software & interactive websites.
Unit Standards Alabama Course of Study Standards: Algebra I Analyze linear functions from their equations, slopes, and intercepts. 4. Represent graphically common relations. 8. Solve systems of linear equations and inequalities in two variables graphically or algebraically.
Unit Standards cont. Technology Standards Utilize advanced features of spreadsheet software, including creating charts and graphs, sorting and filtering data, creating formulas, and applying functions. Practice ethical and legal use of technology systems and digital content. 12. Use digital tools to publish curriculum-related content. 13. Demonstrate collaborative skills using curriculum-related content in digital environments.
Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction Student can create a board game that involves math-related terminology and problem solving Student can create a test or quiz for the class that is related to graphing Gifted/ Talented Students Write simplified explanations of the student’s real-world graphing problems Add math pictures and explanations to the student’s card file of vocabulary words Nonnative Speakers Provide additional templates, manipulative, and graphic organizers for clear understanding. Special Needs Students

Background Information A linear equation looks like any other equation. It is made up of two expressions set equal to each other. A linear equation is special because: It has one or two variables. No variable in a linear equation is raised to a power greater than 1 or used as the denominator of a fraction. Linear equations graph as straight lines.
Example Let's draw the graph of this equation. One method we could use is to find the x and y values of two points that satisfy the equation, plot each point, and then draw a line through the points. We can start with any two x values we like, and then find y for each x by substituting the x values into the equation. Let's start with x = 1.
Create a Table 3 2 2.5 1 Value of y Value of x
Let's plot these points and draw a line through them.
