between the survival of a patient and several explanatory variables. A Cox model
provides an estimate of the treatment effect on survival after adjustment for other

Abstract:
In this experiment, three unknown alkanes were identified by observing their
physical and chemical properties. Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons. The properties
identified were qualitative observations, solubility, mass, fire test, boiling point, and
volume, and density. Unknown one was identified as hexane, unknown two as
pentane, and unknown three as heptane. The results were as unpredictable but
understandable and the properties of the boiling points of the unknowns closely
match that of the categories of organic compounds, just not the densities. This led to
low confidence that the results are invalid.
Introduction:
In this lab three alkanes were identified based off their properties. Alkanes are
saturated hydrocarbons. Alkanes consist of hydrogen and carbon atoms arranged
in a structure with only single bonds. Alkanes have the general chemical formula
Cв‚™Hв‚™. The alkanes range in complexity from the simplest case of methane,
CHв‚„ where n = 1, to much larger molecules. They can also contain other
functional groups. A functional group is a group of atoms that defines the
characteristics of a compound, for alkanes they are called alkyls. In this lab five
unknown alkanes were tested. They have low boiling points, are immiscible in
water, react only with O2 and halogens, and are usually clear, odorless, and
tasteless. The combustion of hydrocarbons, when it goes to completion, produces
CO2 and H2O. These reactions do not always go to completion and may sometimes
produce incomplete oxidation products. The efficiency of alkanes as fuels is
measured by a comparison to an arbitrarily chosen standard, 2,2,4 trimethylpentane,
which is assigned an octane number of a hundred. For unbranched alkanes, as the
number of carbons increases the octane number decreases. Then within a family of
isomers, as branching increases, the octane number increases. This is because the
more volatile the fuel is, the easier it is to get it to the gas phase and burn in an
engine. The more branching there is, the more ends there are for O2 to attack to

Democracy in China and Japan Two of the greatest powers in the modern world are
China and Japan. Both countries have dealt with civil unrest and violence to establish
the governments that exist today, and both maintain status as major economic powers
in the modern global trade markets. Located a mere 1000 miles apart, these two
countries share many similarities, but they also could not be more different. While
Japan has made huge strives towards becoming a free country, China is failing to
establish democratic principles; this is especially demonstrated through government
implemented censorship programs. The problem of government censorship and
freedom, or lack thereof, of the press is much more prevalent in China than in Japan.
This can be attributed to the two varying types of governments present within the two

suspicion of what is going to happen to him.
There is then a tracking shot of the man inter cut with a close up of a roadside
drain, where the creature Tooms is lurking. When focused on the drain, the camera
slowly zooms in. when the camera cuts back to the man; it is a low angle tracking
shot. This low angle shot gives the impression to the audience that they are looking
through the eyes of whatever is in the drain. This gives the scene a sinister and
foreboding atmosphere.
This is emphasised when the camera zooms in of the businessman in a low angle shot
and gradually becomes slow motion. The entire colour is then drained out of the
frame except for the man. This emphasises the earlier point, and suggests the creature
in the drain is focusing all his attention and malice on the man. At this point there is a
section of music that sounds computer generated, almost alien. This adds to the
malice of the creature and is repeated throughout the opening scene when there is
evidence that the creature in the drain is near.
This shot is then followed by a close up of the drain, showing two strange pale eyes.

At Santa Maria College, we are have to treat others with respect and to always help
out and lend a helping hand to those who are in need. To show this in the
community, Santa Maria Students actively provided volunteer work to

year I volunteered at Scotch College, and helped out a Grade 2 teacher with many
