Urethritis is a medical term for inflammation of the urethra, which is located at the end of the
urinary tract. The urethra is longer in males compared to females as it needs to travel down the
length of the penis. When this region of the urinary tract becomes inflamed, patients develop
burning on urination, pain, clear or purulent urethral discharge, and occasionally bleeding. Urethritis
is most commonly seen in sexually active men.
The most common cause of urethritis is infection due to Chlamydia or Gonorrhea. Urethritis is also
commonly caused by Mycoplasma genitalium. These forms of urethritis are sexually transmitted
