(CPT)
What is it?
CPT is a type of work authorization which allows F-1 students to
participate in an off-campus internship in the U.S. to gain work
experience related to their major field of study.
How do I get CPT?
1. Secure an internship in the U.S.
• Must be directly related to your major
• Can be paid or unpaid
2. Get approval from the School.
• Submit petition to the School
• Complete workshops and attend mandatory meetings
• Earn academic credit by registering for internship course
(3 credits)
3. Visas and Compliance will authorize CPT.
• You will receive a new I-20 with CPT authorization before you
start internship.
CPT Eligibility
1. Complete one full academic year at Hult
San Francisco [in F-1 status]
• Fall, Winter, Spring, OR
• Summer 1, Summer 2, Fall, Winter – must take 6 credits in
each Summer term to qualify
2. Continue to maintain F-1 status if
participating in AY rotation.
CPT Authorization
Rules:
• CPT is granted for a specific period of time.
• CPT is granted for a specific employer.
• When school is in session: Maximum 20 hrs/week
• When school is not in session (Summer): 20+ hrs/week
• Must have new I-20 with CPT authorization before starting
internship. DO NOT start internship until you have this new I-20.
Optional Practical Training
(OPT)
What is it?
OPT is a type of work authorization which allows F-1 students to
work in the U.S. for 12 months after graduation to gain work
experience related to their major field of study.
What can I do with OPT?
Where can I work?
• Regular paid employment
• Internships (paid or unpaid)
• Work for hire/contract
• Self-employed/start your own business
Requirements:
• Must work at minimum 20 hrs/week
• Work must be directly related to your major field of study
• Work must be relevant for someone with a Bachelor’s degree
• Once your OPT starts, do not accrue more than 90 days of
unemployment
How do I get OPT?
1. Complete your degree at Hult.
• Registrar’s office will verify degree completion and check
credits.
2. In your final term: Apply for Employment
Authorization Document (EAD) with USCIS.
• If completing your degree early, your I-20 will be shortened.
• Attend an OPT Application Workshop.
• Start working once you receive EAD card.
Who is eligible for OPT?
Option 1:
Complete your degree by spending your final academic year in San
Francisco. Spend these final terms in the U.S.:
• Fall, Winter, Spring, OR
• Summer 1, Summer 2, Fall, Winter - must take 6 credits in
each Summer term to qualify
