Want to give a great
speech? This template
makes it easy!
These slides will guide you through the process
of creating a well-organized speech with easy-
to-deliver content.
Just replace the instructions on each slide with your own content.
Then add new slides to fill in your 3 Supporting Topics. Practice,
practice, practice, and you’re ready to deliver a great speech!
Title of
Your Presentation
Your Name and Title
Choose a title that shows how your presentation will benefit the
audience, such as “Use This Slide Template to Give a GREAT
Speech!”
attention grabber
Your Attention Grabber is a brief story, question, image, or
surprising fact that focuses the audience’s attention on your topic.
key message
Your Key Message is a concise statement of your main point. It’s
a high-level opinion or observation that your audience will
remember and repeat to other people.
preview your supporting
topics
During your speech, you’ll discuss three sub-topics that support
your Key Message. If your topic is apples, these might be (1)
apples in ancient times, (2) apples today, and (3) how to grow
apples.
Give your audience a ‘preview of coming attractions’ by saying,
“Today, I’m going to tell you about [then list your Supporting
Topics].”
supporting topic 1
Replace this slide with as many slides as you need to present
your first Supporting Topic. Your discussion can include facts,
figures, argument, stories, images, music, videos, and more. If
Supporting Topic 1 is very long, you can even use this Template
to organize it.
transition 1
You won’t necessarily need a transition slide, but you do need to
guide your audience from one Supporting Topic to the next by
saying something transitional, like, “OK, we’ve talked about
[Supporting Topic 1]. Now let’s look at [Supporting Topic 2].”
supporting topic 2
Your second Supporting Topic also supports your Key message,
but from a different point of view. Each Supporting Topic should
be about a third the length of your speech; for a 20 minute
speech, that will be 5-6 minutes (leaving time for your opening
and close).
transition 2
The same as Transition 1, except you’ll say something like,
“You’ve heard about [Supporting Topic 1] and [Supporting Topic
2]. Our third Supporting Topic is…”
supporting topic 3
By now, you know the drill! Supporting Topics 1, 2, and 3 don’t
have to be organized in the same way, but their content should
work together. You might, for example, talk about how a new
product will change things for (1) your customers, (2) your
employees, and (3) your company’s bottom line.
summary
Here’s where you “tell them what you’ve told them.” Lead into
your speech’s conclusion (which is a repetition of your Key
Message) by saying something like, “We’ve talked about X, we’ve
talked about Y,
we’ve talked about Z, and I hope that I’ve convinced you that…”
key message (again!)
Here’s where you reinforce your Key Message — the most
important thing you have to say. State it in the same words you
used at the beginning of (and probably a few times during) your
speech. This will help your audience remember the main point of
your entire talk.
“ask”
Now that you’ve convinced your audience that your Key Message
is valid, ask them to do something about it. Whether you want a
donation, a commitment of time, help with spreading the word
about your topic, or anything else, ask for it!
questions?
Offer to answer questions, either from the stage, after your talk,
or my email. Even if no one takes you up on this, they’ll
appreciate the offer.
