User Based Tagging in Libraries
What is tagging?  - Assigning a keyword or phrase to a resource to provide organization - Once tags are assigned a user can search for all resources grouped to a particular tag - Allows for multiple resources, such as movies, books, and audio files assigned to a particular term to be discovered at once
What is a folksonomy? Tagging by non-professionals, i.e, everyday users Term coined by Thomas Vander Wal (2005) to describe a taxonomy created by users “folks” Individuals tag items within a website community creating a “tag cloud” which can be accessed by multiple users

Del.icio.us Lets users bookmark for themselves and others See what other users tagged Organize tags into categories Provides a bit of JavaScript for any webpage or blog allowing for direct del.icio.us website access
LibraryThing Social tagging site dedicated to cataloging book resources Using a bit of JavaScript, allows users to roll lists of newly added books to a web page or blog Allows libraries to organize collections by most popular reading list or newly added books
PennTags - Social tagging site dedicated to the University of Pennsylvania community Allows multiple resources to be bookmarked and then tagged from the online catalog Project feature allows users to make files of different documents in a particular area
Why User Based Tagging? Online user based tagging continues to grow in popularity Enhances not replaces the traditional classification methods Provides users with an individual online categorization scheme
