Outdoor Exercise Equipment at local parks
To increase physical activity in local
communities and combat the rise in
obesity rates, there has been an increase
in the number of outdoor exercise
equipment at existing local parks.
The Trust for Public Land has developed
Fitness Zones where outdoor exercise
equipment is donated to local parks.

Editor's Notes

  • #5: Healthy City is a program of the Advancement Project, a civil-rights nonprofit. In our California office we also have an Urban Peace program that strives to reduce the cycle of violence, an Educational Equity program that seeks to expand educational opportunities for low-income children, and an Equity in Public Funds program that increase transparency, accountability, and equity in the use of public funds.
  • #11: Viewing point and thematic data together enables you to get an initial picture of the distribution of resources, while understanding a particular characteristic about an area. For example, are there educational resources in areas with low educational attainment? Is there access to fresh food in areas with a high concentration of people with diabetes?
  • #13: This webinar will demonstrate how to add data you've collected to maps on HealthyCity.org and view it alongside demographic, health, economic and/or available resource data. In this training, you will learn: the importance of collecting data how to add your data to HealthyCity.org how to use maps and data to tell the story of your community
  • #19: The Trust for Public Land's Fitness Zone® Program provides free outdoor fitness equipment in local parks—often in neighborhoods where gym memberships are too pricey to be practical. Nearly 50 percent of Americans get less than the minimum recommended amount of physical activity, and 36 percent engage in no leisure-time activity at all. A lack of exercise opportunities and/or the ability to afford them contribute to this problem. Easy access to parks and outdoor gyms increases our frequency and intensity of exercise.

  • #47: Update this slide then share talking point:Health Coverage Expansion in California. How can data and mapping support your outreach and enrollment effortsDate:Wednesday, August 21, 2013Time:11:00 AM - 12:00 PM PDTThrough implementation of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, California will endeavor to ensure over six million eligible residents enroll in or maintain health insurance through either Medi-Cal expansion or the Health Benefit Exchange - Covered California. The sheer size, geographic distribution, and diversity – including ethnicity, languages spoken and understood, ages, and understanding of health care options – of California’s uninsured residents makes outreach to these populations a daunting task, but one of critical importance. This webinar will demonstrate how HealthyCity.org can be utilized for research, data, and mapping to support your organizations outreach and enrollment efforts.  This webinar will highlight how to (1) map population and health data about your community (2) add your own data about your community or outreach efforts to a map (3) set your own community boundaries to target activities.
