Course Delivery Methods
• Radar trainings are taught based on reference books
and published papers
• Lectures and tutorials
• Practical trainings are conducted using simulations,
mock ups and/or demonstrations
• Radar specialists enter the field with little or no
hands-on experience
• OJT is almost compulsory
• Leads to inconsistency in the knowledge acquired by
various radar specialists

A Simplified Pulsed Radar Block diagram

The antenna can be 12’ or 18’ CP or LP slotted
wavegude array. (DETECTION)
The pedestal turns the antenna at 20 rpm.
The waveguide links the antenna and MTR where RF
propagates.
The MTR Down Unit consists of the controller PCB
and Power PCB, Magnetron, Transmitter and
Receiver. (SIGNAL PROCESSING)
The uplink sends the control and command
information to the MTR.
The Composite downlink sends the Sync, Azimuth,
Video and status to the Processors.
The display consists of all the control inputs and PPI
display. It also holds the processor PCBs. (DATA
EXTRACTION, TRACKING & ARPA FUNCTIONS)
Interfaces to other navigational
equipment and radar.

• Dual-Transceiver Configuration
The antenna can be 18’ or 21’ CP
or HP slotted wavegude array.
(DETECTION)
The pedestal turns the antenna
from 0 to 60 rpm, programmable..
The waveguide links the antenna
and Transceiver.
The pedestal sends encoder, gear
box sensor data to transceiver.
The transceiver houses the central
processor, plot extraction and
tracking processor (optional),
transmitter and receiver.

– Largely theoretical with the use of mathematical tool
such as Scilab to perform complex computations
• Professional Short Courses
– Largely theoretical, with worked examples using
mathematical tools and demonstrations
– Specifically, there is 1 practical-based course that
requires design and building of a simple radar system
(Advanced)
• Final Year Projects/Dissertation
– Design and building of radar systems
– Simulations and analysis of radar systems

– manufacturer-specific for maintenance specialists and
operators
– courses cover radar theories used in the system and
practical skills to carry out maintenance and
operations
• On-The-Job
– trainees learn and work concurrently under
supervision demanded by training command

– usually not focused due to ad-hoc deployment and
secondary tasks
