3-D virtual world environment developed in 2003Characters are called avatars and interact with millions of other users around the worldUsed as grounds for research and education (Mason, 2007; Martinez, Martinez & Warkentin, 2007;Polvinen, 2007; Schmidt, Kinzer & Greenbaum, 2007)What is Second Life?
KUMC in Second LifeIn 2007 SAH and SON bought an island to secure our projects and provide a virtually safe environment for our students.Provide a mechanism to teach procedures before a student tries it on a real person.Provide cheap virtual objects to simulate real-world type experiences.
First Look at KUMC IsleSLurl:http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/KUMC%20Isle/128/128/23
Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy departments were looking for an interdisciplinary assignment to give students practice working together.Home assessment is costly, it is difficult to develop a standardized system – considering the house, the type of patient and the type of disabilities.Difficult to demonstrate the modifications for a specific home and client including the unintended consequences of changes.PT/OT Interest in Second Life
PT/OT Interest in Second LifeNo need for expensive field trips Ability to build the student’s suggested modificationsReinforced a patient-centered approach

Demonstration of the Second Life Home Assessment and Modification
What are the experiences and perceptions of OT and PT students using Second Life to learn and apply clinical skills in home evaluation and modification?Research Question
Recruited 36 1st year PT students and 29 2nd year OT students at the University of Kansas Medical CenterEach student created their own avatar, participated in groups of 3 OT’s and 3 PT’s.Each group worked together in Second Life to communicate and develop their home modification plan. Methods
20 QuestionsLikert type 5-point scale from strongly disagree to strongly agreeQuestions:Prior Technology Experience/KnowledgeBarriers to Learning with Second LifePerceived Benefits of SecondLife Home AssessmentInterest in using Second Life in Future ClassesMethods: Survey
Majority had not previously used Second LifeA few had problems – found the environment unrealisticVast majority found it helpful to learn about home assessmentBeneficial in showing the effects of the environment on functionMany agreed that they would like other virtual experiences in their educationResults of the Survey
Future Uses of Second Life Home Assessment & ModificationProvide access for other PT and OT programs.Provide access to the KU School of Architectural Design for further development and use as a consumer tool.
