Turbocharger
 It is a centrifugal compressor driven by
exhaust gas of engine.
 It produces high boost at high engine
speed.
Disadvantages
At low speed turbo lag occurs.
Working of turbocharger
supercharger
 It is mechanical air pump driven by
engine.
 It produce good boost at low speed.
Disadvantages
At high speed some boost pressure is
wasted
Working of supercharger
What is variable supercharger?
 It is a gearless fully variable pressure
charger.
 It is driven by the electronically actuated
continuously variable transmission belt
and pulley.
Operation of CVT
Function of variable supercharger
 It delivers right amount of boost at right
time.
 At low speed it produces high boost.
 At high speed work of engine is
conserved to produce correct amount of
boost pressure.
Control
 The supercharger works with the signals
from electronic control unit.
 Sensors used
1. MAP sensor
2. MAF sensor
3. O2 sensor
4. Throttle position sensor
5. CKP,CMP sensor
6. Accelerator pedal sensor
Advantages
 It has both the advantages of
turbocharger and supercharger
 High volumetric and thermal efficiency.
 low emission.
 Good working at all conditions
Disadvantages
 Slightly High cost
 Complex operation
