There are three main types of variables in an experiment: the independent variable which is purposefully changed, the dependent variable which is measured to test the effect of changes to the independent variable, and controlled variables which are kept the same to have a fair test. Examples include an experiment testing which material makes the softest shoe sole where the independent variable is the material, dependent is the amount of squashing, and controlled include thickness, weight of the person, and color.
