Message from the Inventure Team We take great pride in sharing with you, Vignettes 2013 – 14, the Year in Review. Last year, we encapsulated one year of learning at Inventure Academy in a PowerPoint Presentation. We called the presentation, Vignettes 2012 – 13. While we found the task quite challenging, we also found it extremely self-affirming. Last year’s Vignettes was so well received, that we have decided to make it an Annual Report / The Year in Review, with wonderful pictures and links to relevant articles and videos. If you really think about it, Inventure Academy does it all - academics, life skills, field / outbound trips, guest lectures, internships, music, sports, dance and drama. All the activities, recorded for posterity in Vignettes 2013 – 14, hold an important place in the spectrum of education and life long learning at Inventure, underpinned by our Core Purpose and Core Values. Thank you for being proactive partners in the education of our children. We hope you enjoy Vignettes 2013 – 14, as much as we loved producing it.

Inventuring “Inventuring”: Our first week approach to classes, sets the tone and ground expectations about what learning is: a hands on, experiential activity based process. The idea is to get students to THINK – to brainstorm, utilize creativity, and work successfully and harmoniously in groups, to bond with each other, the faculty and nature, in the process. Theme based approach to learning at Primary School • Science, EVS, Social Studies, Art, Math, English, Dance, Music, Drama, and Physical Education are all interwoven to make the Theme relevant and holistic based on the CIE and CISCE guidelines. • Students move from theme to theme understanding and experiencing concepts through activities that nurture their Multiple intelligences in consonance with Bloom’s Taxonomy. Reading and Writing Programme • Students of Grades 1- 5 published their writing to parents and friends through 4 publishing celebrations through the year. • The writing was spread across the three main genres of writing – Narrative (Small Moments and Realistic fiction), Persuasive writing (persuasive letter, reviews and book reviews) and Information writing (How to and All About books). • Middle school too published their narrative writing unit this year and shared many of their powerful stories with family and friends. • Next year we hope to launch reading workshop in primary along with the writing and introduce the full suite of writing units in middle school. Mathematics Exhibition • The exhibition was put together by students of Grades 6,7 and 8 • A huge model of the Pythagoras Theorem welcomed the audience who were then taken through ‘mind goggling’ optical Illusions into the beautiful world of shapes • Pascal’s Triangle helped in throwing light on the following-The Fibonacci’s Sequence, Triangular Numbers, Tetrahedral Numbers, Symmetrical, Exponents of 11, Square Numbers, Odd and Evens, Prime numbers etc. • Napier’s bones showed an alternate way of calculation of products and quotients of numbers based on Arab Theorems and Lattice Multiplication • Interesting games and puzzles lent a dimension of fun • All exhibits on display were prepared by students themselves during their Math Classes
Library Week… The main aim of having the Library Week, is to promote a habit of Reading in children early on. This year included the following Activities: 9 Grades1&2: Musical Book is what they did. Tried reading different books by singing songs from the stories. 9 Grades 3&4: Create A Story is what they did. Children were given a book. They were asked to look at the cover picture and the title, then think what the book could be about and write a story on the same. Later, they were asked to read their own creation.
Library Week 9 Grade 5: Draw, Draw was the activity for these children. They were asked to draw their favorite characters from different books they had read.

Some Additional Learning Activities • Berserk 2013, a 3 day residential Art conference was organized for children in the age group of 8-12 years between 19th to 22nd August, 2013 • The four Art verticals were, Theatre, Dance, Music and Visual Arts • Final participants from Inventure Academy were: 9 Vinaya Seshan Theatre 9 Riya Venkateshwaran Dance 9 Armani Vikram Music 9 Anusha Kumar Visual Arts • Riya and Anusha have won opportunities to work closely with Jagrithi and Lourd Vijaya Dance Studio.
Times NIE: Think and Learn Challenge ƒ Think and Learn Challenge 9 Students of Grades 9-12 participated in this challenge jointly organized by Times NIE and Byju’s Classes 9 The aim was Learning through Fun by focusing on Analytical and Logical reasoning. 9 33 children qualified for the 2nd round 9 These kids were among the top 10 percentile from over 30,000 aspirants across 200 schools that participated 9 The following Inventurers are ranked in the top 100 amongst 36,000 city students from 200 schools who took part in this challenge. Student Leadership Camp The Student Leadership Camp was conducted by INME & the Inventure Student Council Advisory Team. “The camp was a great amount of fun. It was interactive and enjoyable, and on behalf of the Student Council, I extend a warm thank you to Doc, and the INME team for coming to Inventure and hosting this camp. Amidst lots of laughing and silly moments, we did learn a lot. Young Entrepreneurs Challenge (YEC)- 2013-14 • Groups of senior school students submitted business proposals to maximize revenue and facilitate wider world learning • Our Young Entrepreneurs ran various stalls (food, games, green team products, etc.) on Sports Day, putting theory into practice • Total revenue collected through sales during the YEC was close to Rs. 92,347/- • The proceeds given away for Community Outreach after deducting costs were around Rs. 67,515/- • Congratulations High Schoolers!
Community Outreach • Adopted Schools: Community Outreach at Inventure Academy is run by it’s students and faculty. We have officially adopted 3 Government schools. • Saturday Program: Inventure faculty along with students of Grades 6 to 9 visit 4 Government Schools on Saturdays to teach English to these children • Going to School: Inventure students from Grades 10 and 11 teach Business Skills to the students of Gunjur High School, using dynamic set of stories that focus on a particular entrepreneurial skill, making them more job-ready upon completing their education. • Computer Skills: Students of a nearby Government School visit Inventure Academy on a weekly basis and are taught basic computer skills by our Grade 10 and 12 students.

Inter School Events ART: 3 Peel Competition 9 5 Inventure Students’ work have been selected to be displayed at ‘Sublime’ Art Gallery, UB City. 9 This exhibition brings together 100 works of art by children selected across Bengaluru and some other cities , from schools who offer art as a special subject from grade 8 to 12. 9 This Art Square offers art collectors & enthusiasts the opportunity to discover tomorrow’s promising talents. 9 Our student’s artworks would fund a noble cause as proceeds from the sale of artworks will go towards a charitable organization

Career Guidance & College Placements Ramesh Hariharan, Vice Principal & College Counselor provided hands on, one on one counseling to our students • Pathfinder (Workwise) career guidance evaluation was administered to all 10th and 11th grade students • College placement counseling – Univariety, Singapore conducted regular workshops and one on one sessions in person and online • Regular visits were made by institutes of higher learning to Inventure, e.g. Trinity College, Dublin, University of Waterloo, Denison University, Sarah Lawrence, National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University to name a few • Two week internships for grade 11 students were conducted

Faculty Development & Incentives Inventure Academy’s goal is to nurture faculty retention and loyalty. As a non-profit Institution working to build a learning community, one of our innovative incentives for faculty is the “Employee Sharing and Opportunity plan”(ESOP) Programme. • A specified portion of fees is earmarked annually for distribution amongst team members, subject to serving a minimum period of a pre-determined number of years • Leadership and development opportunities to head committees.   • 1. Message from the Inventure Team We take great pride in sharing with you, Vignettes 2013 – 14, the Year in Review. Last year, we encapsulated one year of learning at Inventure Academy in a PowerPoint Presentation. We called the presentation, Vignettes 2012 – 13. While we found the task quite challenging, we also found it extremely self-affirming. Last year’s Vignettes was so well received, that we have decided to make it an Annual Report / The Year in Review, with wonderful pictures and links to relevant articles and videos. If you really think about it, Inventure Academy does it all - academics, life skills, field / outbound trips, guest lectures, internships, music, sports, dance and drama. All the activities, recorded for posterity in Vignettes 2013 – 14, hold an important place in the spectrum of education and life long learning at Inventure, underpinned by our Core Purpose and Core Values. Thank you for being proactive partners in the education of our children. We hope you enjoy Vignettes 2013 – 14, as much as we loved producing it.

Reading and Writing Programme • Students of Grades 1- 5 published their writing to parents and friends through 4 publishing celebrations through the year. • The writing was spread across the three main genres of writing – Narrative (Small Moments and Realistic fiction), Persuasive writing (persuasive letter, reviews and book reviews) and Information writing (How to and All About books). • Middle school too published their narrative writing unit this year and shared many of their powerful stories with family and friends. • Next year we hope to launch reading workshop in primary along with the writing and introduce the full suite of writing units in middle school. Mathematics Exhibition • The exhibition was put together by students of Grades 6,7 and 8 • A huge model of the Pythagoras Theorem welcomed the audience who were then taken through ‘mind goggling’ optical Illusions into the beautiful world of shapes • Pascal’s Triangle helped in throwing light on the following-The Fibonacci’s Sequence, Triangular Numbers, Tetrahedral Numbers, Symmetrical, Exponents of 11, Square Numbers, Odd and Evens, Prime numbers etc. • Napier’s bones showed an alternate way of calculation of products and quotients of numbers based on Arab Theorems and Lattice Multiplication • Interesting games and puzzles lent a dimension of fun • All exhibits on display were prepared by students themselves during their Math Classes
  • 30. Library Week… The main aim of having the Library Week, is to promote a habit of Reading in children early on. This year included the following Activities: 9 Grades1&2: Musical Book is what they did. Tried reading different books by singing songs from the stories. 9 Grades 3&4: Create A Story is what they did. Children were given a book. They were asked to look at the cover picture and the title, then think what the book could be about and write a story on the same. Later, they were asked to read their own creation.

Young Entrepreneurs Challenge (YEC)- 2013-14 • Groups of senior school students submitted business proposals to maximize revenue and facilitate wider world learning • Our Young Entrepreneurs ran various stalls (food, games, green team products, etc.) on Sports Day, putting theory into practice • Total revenue collected through sales during the YEC was close to Rs. 92,347/- • The proceeds given away for Community Outreach after deducting costs were around Rs. 67,515/- • Congratulations High Schoolers!
