VIKINGS
INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER SOCIETIES
Matt and Steve
WHAT SETTLEMENTS DID THE VIKINGS VISIT?
• The Vikings travelled to many places in the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. The most significant of these be
• Scotland
• Ireland
• Iceland
• Greenland
• and England
HOW DID VIKINGS INTERACT WITH SETTLEMENTS?
 The Vikings had many ways of dealing with different settlements, mostly either raiding or trading
 Fear of raiding from Vikings could cause these trades to occur
 Eg. Raiding that first occurred in a settlement in west Europe shocked nearby villages, causing them to peacefully
give away their loot to avoid harm and destruction.
 Vikings mostly chose to raid villages that held a vast amount of loot.
RAID OR TRADE???
 Vikings often offered a negotiation when dealing with a settlement, if the town did not agree to their
demands would raid and sack the whole village.
 The Norse people believed that theft was dishonourable, whereas raiding was considered a challenge to
a fight, were the victor to retain all the spoils
 The Vikings believed that the raids were a normal and desirable consequence of the pressures on a
growing society and of the religious beliefs of the time.
WHAT WERE THE AFFECTS OF THESE INTERACTIONS?
 Raided villages were often left with homes and buildings damaged or destroyed.
 The numerous Viking raids in Europe left a strain on their economy, massively impacting living
conditions
 Civilians were often captured and sold into slavery.
 A number of words across Europe have Scandinavian origins.
