Visual impairment is defined as impaired vision that adversely affects educational performance, even with correction. It includes blindness, where visual acuity is 20/200 or less, and partial sight, where acuity is between 20/70 and 20/200. Common causes include cataracts, retinopathy of prematurity, glaucoma, diabetes, cortical vision loss, and refractive errors. Signs may include appearance of the eyes, complaints of symptoms, and behavioral characteristics. Screening tests assess visual acuity using a Snellen chart. The curriculum for students with visual impairments includes both the core academic curriculum and an expanded core curriculum focusing on compensatory skills.
