Editor's Notes

  • #2: As a prospective candidate for the Library Manager position at Matthews, I’d like to begin by thanking Tammy for considering me as a candidate to join her team and region. I’d also like to thank Rick and David for allowing me this opportunity to discuss my credentials with them as well. Today I’ll outline my vision for leading the Matthews Library team to meet community needs with library service
  • #3: High level of community involvement Celebrate character of the community – cultural awareness / library as commons Follow FRL blueprint – high level of community involvement / outreach / co-creating value with partners – West Corridor Roundtable, Stratford Richardson & McCrorey YMCA, FDDA, Goodwill, Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology, Project Safe Neighborhoods, City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County
  • #4: Relationships Building Provide opportunities for staff to find value in the library’s mission Win the hearts and minds of the people – internal / external stakeholders Involve the staff in brainstorming the vision for MS Meet individually with staff to discuss their personal goals, aspirations and training needs – tailor my expectations to their unique strengths and aspects of their jobs they enjoy Tell the story about Wayne
  • #5: Experience with outcome based management – attended the PLA Bootcamp Visioning exercise & Planning For Results model Who we are Who do we serve What services to we provide Why do we exist?
  • #6: Partnerships are vital Build relationships with community leaders, stakeholders, non-profits, other agencies Goodwill of the Southern Piedmont West Corridor Roundtable / YMCA of Greater Charlotte – McCrorey & Stratford Richardson Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology (CMS) Freedom Drive Development Association City of Charlotte / Mecklenburg County Goodwill of the Southern Piedmont West Corridor Roundtable / YMCA of Greater Charlotte – McCrorey & Stratford Richardson Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology (CMS) Freedom Drive Development Association City of Charlotte / Mecklenburg County Audit existing relationships with community partners / Establish relationships with new partners Open doors for my staff – something I’ve done at FRL – Dot Siler with West Corridor Roundtable / Holly Summers with Stratford Richardson YMCA / Cheryl Brinkley-Roach with Goodwill of the Southern Piedmont / Shawn Krizanik with Project Safe Neighborhoods & AARP /
  • #7: Alluded to a conviction in my last interview about how proud I am of the work we are doing at FRL. We offer some of the most innovative, exciting library programming at FRL that I have ever been a part of in my career and that is a testament to our team. Our community often comments I had no idea the public library offered these types of events and programs… This photo demonstrates the carnage our library programs leave behind
  • #8: Library as Destination Place – built up a community expectation for excellence, raised awareness of FRL and PLCMC – how many events are people willing to stand outside in late December?
  • #9: Wayne – Vietnam Veteran story
  • #10: Patrice Ebert and her Unified Services team came out to FRL on Tuesday of last week and she publicly complimented FRL before the whole team, specifically Jurhandi Pendergrass, a library assistant in our Circulation Dept. Immediately following the meeting I told J in front of his supervisor that someone paid him a huge compliment today in our meeting. I recounted Patrice’s experience at FRL the previous Saturday and her observation of J modeling the Unified Services approach to a customer by being able to answer a reference question on the spot at the Circulation Desk. J glowed and smiled because he was so proud that someone from library administration recognized his hard work and acknowledged his contribution in front of other PLCMC staff. It was a priceless moment and I happy to report FRL has had numerous such moments this past year. I always make a point to share with my staff the testimonials and nice emails from our customers EVERY chance I get. Celebrate our success – Testimonials - communication with staff about the importance of their role (Tell story about Jurhandi & Patrice) Foster sense of community at library by acknowledging the community’s role in achieving our vision Celebrate accomplishments of the library staff – individual and team success in reaching our collective goals blog / Flickr – share stories with all branch staff potlucks staff meetings sharing testimonials from happy customers, partners, etc. rewards & recognition nomination for library awards letters of recommendation for training opportunities, promotions, etc.
  • #11: Convey my experiences as model In summary I would draw upon my cumulative 15 year career working in 3 stellar public libraries to successfully implement my vision for library service to the town of Matthews - Demonstrated track record of success
