This document analyzes the global API ecosystem by looking at the geographic locations of APIs. It finds that APIs are highly concentrated in a few regions. It maps the locations of over 6,000 APIs and analyzes how APIs are co-used between different regions. The analysis shows that while digitization reduces distance, geography still plays an important role in the API ecosystem as large companies remain clustered. It concludes that the API ecosystem provides flexibility for actors to offer and consume services across borders, but that public and private APIs differ in their geographic usage. Future work is suggested on studying internal company networks, API diffusion over time, and data governance policies' impact on the ecosystem.
