This document compares the performance of two virtualization hypervisors, VMware ESX Server 3.0.1 and Xen 3.0.3, based on a series of benchmark tests. The key findings are:
1) VMware ESX Server delivered performance close to native across various CPU, memory, and I/O intensive workloads, with an average slowdown of 3%. Xen showed twice the overhead of ESX Server, with an average slowdown of 6%.
2) ESX Server was able to run tests using multiple virtual CPUs and multiple virtual machines, demonstrating good scalability. Similar tests could not be run on Xen 3.0.3 due to product failures.
3) While
