Walnut is a more widely used product than you would at first think. Apart from the obvious nuts, the wood and oil are also used. The oil is used in cooking and as a varnish. The wood is used from items such as instruments to furniture and even gun-stocks.
The Nut is used for many different things ranging from polishing to cooking. Walnut shell is in great demand for grit blasting and barrel polishing. Dyes are made from the oil for carpets in India to delicate clothing in China and even basket weaving in America. Used in sweet and savoury dishes such as walnut cake and Salsa di Noce ( a Italian pasta sauce)  Walnuts have also been proven by scientists at Yale to reduce cholesterol levels. (www.walnuts.org) (Dyed)
It is mainly polished before use to bring out the colour. It is a very strong and hard wearing wood, explaining it’s use in table tops and gun stocks widely. The patterns in the wood or ‘ the grain’ is very elegant and because of this is used instruments. The most valuable piece of the wood is the burl which is under the ground, it has the best grain. The main source of the wood is Calafornia
CAlafornia is shown on this map. It is the main growing distric for Walnut wood
The oil is completely edible and is often used on salads. It has a nutty quality which can be taken away by heating at high temperatures. It is mostly produced in France. Used a lot by renaissance painters as a oil paint thinner. Favoured by wood-workers coating wooden items that will make contact with food.
As is shown above in 2000/01 the U.S. Walnut industry had to increase the price by 37%. It is thought the price rise was due to the price of exporting the product.
There are many species of walnut tree, only the English Walnut (Juglans nigra) grows in England. The climate in England is not sufficiently warm enough to grow in large plantations. Good quality walnut oil can only be made from French walnut trees. Not enough walnut could be grown in England to meet the entire English demand. The trees are grown in groves so no deforestation takes place (voiced opinions by Scierie-Forest Walnut exploiters France).
The Gun trade is enhanced by readily available amounts of walnut for the gun stocks. Gallons of fuel is being used to ship unnecessary amounts of walnut around the world to simply be wasted. (As protested by Christopher Kendall from the university of north Carolina) Walnuts are not essential to our survival. Less squirrels would be shot in plantations for stealing nuts.
