Web 2.0
Web 2.0 Web 2.0 is a phrase coined by O'Reilly Media in 2003 in reference to a perceived second generation of web-based communities and hosted services such as social-networking sites, wikis and blogs— which facilitate collaboration and sharing between users.
So What is Web 2.0 What it isn’t is a standard like IEEE 802.11a Networking standard But rather Web 2.0 represents an important shift in the way digital information is created, shared, stored, distributed, and manipulated. In the next few years it will have a significant impact in the way businesses use both the Internet and enterprise-level IT applications.
Web 2.0 describes a set of next-generation Internet technologies. These protocols and tools make it easier to create online applications that behave dynamically, much like traditional PC-based software. They're also highly social, encouraging users to manipulate and interact with content in new ways. Web 2.0 pushes computing power off the desktop and onto the Internet, which means less time and money spent on PC software administration. As a general rule, Web 2.0 tools are also less expensive than traditional software — and many are even free. Because they're Web-based, all you need to get started is an up-to-date browser.
Why It should Matter to You Although many of the most famous Web 2.0 tools are consumer applications there are two main reasons why Web 2.0 is relevant to business people. The first has to do with reducing the costs associated with traditional enterprise applications. As any IT manager will tell you, it's expensive to install, configure, maintain, and upgrade essential software on personal computers and company servers — and even more so if you have lots of employees with lots of different computing needs. Web 2.0 tools eliminate much of this hassle and expense because Web 2.0 applications reside on servers maintained by the vendors themselves.
User Created Content Paradigm Shift: From mass media to personal publishing From Code to Content From consuming to contributing
User Created Content- What are some examples you know of? MySpace Facebook wikipedia Webopedia YouTube wikispaces FlickR bebo But there are so many more blogs
User Created Content- most famous example Wikipedia
Web 2.0 tools are being used for new forms of Publishing and Researching: The CSIRO is one example of an organisation which is using blogs and wikis as collaborative tools for research and publishing
Read the following quote and guess who made this remark: “ the consumer Web is moving at a very rapid pace, and so wikis, the idea that in some cases you want everybody to be able to contribute and come in, offer up their ideas, if you can just get the basic site organization right, the kind of creativity and participation from an organization that you can see can be very, very strong and really encouraging people, not a formal process, the wiki lets that happen.” Who said it – Bill Gates
Now onto some of the tools You do not have to deliver your assessment using these tools they are just an option. A report in MS word is fine
Wikispaces http:// www.wikispaces.com Wiki's are websites or similar online resources which allows users to add and edit content collectively. They are effective tools to keep notes and share ideas among a group of people. Generally available to be viewed by any one but only editable by those who have been allowed to be "members" of the wiki by the person who originally created the wiki.
Here is one of my Wikis for E-learning tools in education
Businesses and organisations that use wikis
How to create a wiki Go to http:// www.wikispaces.com Sign up for an account Then create your own space unless you already have an account in which case you will sign in then create a space.
Blogs
Blog sites Weblogs or ‘Blogs’ are personal Websites consisting of regularly updated entries displayed in reverse chronological order. They read like a diary or journal, but with the most recent entry at the top. They have become popular in the last few years because of their ease of use and the social aspects- linking to your friends, colleagues etc but also as a business tool. My personal favourite blog site is wordpress.com but there is also blogger http:// www.blogger.com blogspot http:// www.blogspot.com
Who in the business world is using Blogs And there are plenty more
How to create a blog Go to http://www.wordpress.com and click signup now and follow your nose  Again you can embed objects, create hyperlinks and embed multimedia objects such as a PowerPoint presentations –but not as easily as a wiki
SlideShare
Slideshare http:// slideshare.net SlideShare is a website that hosts and shares presentations. You can upload, find / download interesting PowerPoint presentations to be shown on a blog or wiki.
How do I use it. You go to slideshare.net and sign up for an account
Once you have your account go to upload and then browse and select your PowerPoint file 1 2
Wait for slideshare to upload your PP then click publish (it may a little while depending on the file size)
Once it has finished uploading your file the page will refresh it’s self Then click “HERE”
Last step is to click on your PP and get the code to be copied to WIKI or blog 1 2
While your there have a look around While your at slideshare have look around at some of the other presentations. I could probably find some Spanish lesson slideshows!
Scribd
Another great tool is www.scribd.com Unfortunately it is presently blocked from within the TAFE but I’m trying to have it unblocked for us, but Scribd is a site where you can store your documents - doc, ppt, pdf, xls, etc and share them with others.   You can also embed a document in your blog or web page.
How do you use scribd Go to scribd.com and this time you don’t have to sign up for an account but it would be handy so you can keep track of your uploaded documents.
Browse to a file and it will be automatically uploaded
Once it is uploaded Click “publish” Click “no thank you not now” or “sign up” Then click “View Here” Then copy and paste the code into your blog or wiki.
Vodcasts Video on demand
Video –did you love my video message  To create the Vodcast on my blog I used a web cam and windows media player to create my movies as a WMM file Then I uploaded it to http:// www.eyespot.com which will store it and eyespot provided me with the code to embedded in my blog. 20 minutes from turning on camera to blog- I like that productivity.
OK Issues
What do you think are possible issues? Security Security is handle mostly by the online sites so choose your tools wisely Bandwidth Yes with these online tools you will need a fast connection and plenty of bandwidth Copyright When you upload something do you retain copyright? Can you use/modify something just because you found it on the net What others can you think of?
In conclusion That was just a few of the potential Web 2 tools. And w e haven’t even started on the productivity tools. Everyday many more tools are being developed so have a look around and try some out. For the rest of the day-you will be working independently You can explore the tools we have looked at here & don’t say you need help your IT people- you should be able to follow your nose  OR Begin the tasks for your assignments –fun fun fun Be good for Julie and I’ll see you next week
