- 3. Welcome! Whatever your skill level may be, it will work for what we learn about today. I hope to learn from you as we discuss Web 2.0 applications. A lot of learning about Web 2.0 and beyond is participatory and exploratory – you need to jump in and experiment with the programs, tools, software and hardware in order to grow.

- 7. Web 2.0 = Open Source Collaborative – one person creates, another user adds to the project, a different person might tweak it in a new way, and so on. Less of an emphasis on “ownership.” More emphasis on sharing. Encompasses blogging, social networking, wikis, podcasting, vodcasting, xml & rss, aggregators and widgets.
- 8. Sharing – a New Model Many Web 2.0 applications are free. This collaborative sharing model is a big step away from the typical proprietary manufacturer keeping tight control over a product (think: Microsoft). With sharing and online discussion come solutions to problems.
- 9. Blogs and Wikis Blogging is a way to publish your thoughts, dreams, aspirations, opinions, photos, etc. online in either a public or private format. The blogosphere is absolutely huge! Technorati , a site that indexes and tracks blogs, estimates that there are 112 million blogs. Others argue, saying that while many blogs are initially created, not as many are actually used. - 13. Why in the World Wiki? A wiki is a place where you can post information online. Others can edit and add to that information. We even used a wiki to plan our presentations for this conference! Students might use a wiki to provide discussion about a reading passage. They could also take on the role of a character in a book and describe another direction the character might have taken.

- 16. Social networking A Pew Internet Poll shows that 55 percent of all online teens aged 12-17 use social networking sites. Some 48 percent of teens visit social networking sites daily. - 21. Aggregators Aggregators help you keep track of blogs you are following without having to visit them every day. When a new blog entry is posted for a site you subscribe to (via RSS feed) the blog is placed in a “holding space” until you have time to read it. Great time saver and easy to set up. - 23. Podcasting/Vodcasting Appeals to different learning styles. Easy to produce and upload. Schools using them to have students produce audio and video projects related to the curriculum. May require file conversion to upload, depending on how your district has set up a server and access. Example: hard drive disk camcorder (had to convert to mp4 format for uploading).

- 30. Make your schedule available… Google has a great free, calendar function. You create your online calendar and link it to your web page - advantages. If you have Novell, you can do the same thing. www.google.com Click on: Calendar and then: Take a Tour. You do need a Google account (free) to create a username and password.
- 31. gmail Worth a look! Just visit Google. When you change internet service providers, your e-mail does not have to change. Huge amounts of storage space. Ways to organize and catalog your e-mail. Has chat function compatible with other gmail users. The account gives you access to all of the Google tools, including Blogger.
- 32. Drive database use Use your library site to promote database usage. Many database vendors will give you graphics to use for linking to their sites from your page. Databases you purchase will provide statistical reports for you, showing your school’s exact usage, which in turn drives purchasing decisions.

- 34. Encourage Use Consider making web guides or pathfinders tailored to the databases you want students to use: http:// teachers.olatheschools.com/oelibrary / Your SPED department will love you! Guides such as this are helpful for explaining databases to parent groups.
- 35. Your school library site Biggest caveat – should be regularly updated. You can create a library site using a blog! This is much easier than learning how to use Dreamweaver or Front Page, for example. My district – going to a WordPress model for school sites.
