Characteristics of Web 2.0DeepaMaunick
Introduction“Web 1.0 was about connecting computers and making technology more efficient for computers. Web 2.0 is about connecting people and making technology efficient for people.” (Dan Zambonini)
Web 2.0 and Social ComputingWeb 1.0 was released in the early 1993 to 2001. The term www occurred due to the burst of the DOT-com bubble in 2001. Since 2004, Web 2.0 was used for current web design, business models and branding methods of sites on the World Wide Web.
Web 2.0 and Social Computing
Web 2.0 and Social ComputingWeb 2.0 can be broadly defined as a web application that facilitates interactive information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design and collaboration on the World Wide Web.Tim O’Reilly defined it as “Like many important concepts, Web 2.0 doesn't have a hard boundary, but rather, a gravitational core. You can visualize Web 2.0 as a set of principles and practices that tie together a veritable solar system of sites that demonstrate some or all of those principles, at a varying distance from that core.”

Characteristics of Web 2.0User centered designA web design which is created in a way that it fulfills every possible need of the end user and empowers the user to perform certain customizations within the design.
User-centered designs are cleaner, often ajax based and easy to navigate. The appearance of the design is given a special preference while creating such a design.
Example: iGoogle, a customizable Google homepage.Characteristics of Web 2.0Crowd-sourcingEvery small unit of contribution is important to a Web 2.0 service. Millions of such contributions eventually lead the website to state of higher relevance.
For example, blogging platforms like Blogger and WordPresshave millions of users acting as contributors.Characteristics of Web 2.0Web as platform- Web 2.0 services do not require a client download condition. Also there is no dependency on a particular OS for accessing the web services. Whatever be the method of internet access (Windows, Mac or Mobile OS), the web 2.0 applications are not affected.
Characteristics of Web 2.0CollaborationEarlier, there used to exist only driven information sources such as Britannica Encylopedia, where collaboration was never implemented.
However, Web 2.0 enables collaboration between different users.
Example: wikipediaCharacteristics of Web 2.0Power decentralizationEarlier, most of the services used to be administered and not automated.
But Web 2.0 services follow a self-service model rather than being an administrator dependent.
